Sailomat 3040

Hi,
I have just joined this forum, so thanks for letting me in.
I know this subject has been covered in the past but I have recently purchased a Sailomat 3040 for my Elizabethan 33, the unit isn’t in bad condition but most fixings are seized,, I’m slowly getting through them by drilling or a bit of heat and patience!!
So can anyone give me some advice on the 3040 with regards to going through it, setting it up on the boat or just about any advice would be very much appreciated and if someone would have an electronic copy of the manual that would also be very helpful.

Well thanks for any help you can give.

Best Regards
Jerry

I have the same windvane on my old boat. Mine looks like working, but needs greacing.
Any one knows what kind of greace I should put in and how much?

@Jerry - do you still need the manual for yours? I made a scan.

That's a low velocity, low heat situation, with exposure to salt spray if not water, so use waterproof white lithium grease. Enough to fill the joints, and wipe off any excess that comes out of the joints when you assemble them. Make sure that everything that is supposed to move moves smoothly. Nice project.

Oh, and welcome to the forum, Jerry. Gord May, our designated greeter, does not seem to be around today.

Hi, Thanks for thinking of me, I’m sorted for a manual as someone (cannot remember who) kindly sent me a pdf of it, I don’t recall a grease type being mentioned, I did grease my unit with some pretty standard waterproof grease!! It now feels a bit on the tight side, a bit draggy if you know what I mean.
I have just started using a white PTFE grease on a bike of mine, that is a different ballgame, very smooth and slippery.
Let me know how you get on, ps I still have not fitted it to the boat yet !!
Regards Jerry

Re: Sailomat 3040

I am working on memory here... so it might be wrong...

I had a Sailomat on my old boat, and my recollection is that NO grease was to be used, all the moving parts were self-lubricating. If they were binding, a water flush to remove salt was the first tool. If the bearing surfaces were worn, replacement was the next option.

But, as always, read and follow the manual, not the vague recollections of an old sailor.

In general, grease in environments exposed to salt water and air is a bad idea. Salt water lands on it, the water evaporates, leaving salt crystals behind. It gradually collects salt crystals, and the grease gets more and more gritty and abrasive with time.
