He isn't sailing anymore!!! HIS choice!!! He used the donations for his sailboat issues, to buy a Hatteras - 'bait & switch'.

Like him or not, i understand his business model. don't agree with how he did a bait n switch by buying a different boat. For Bobby, time is money. He's got to keep producing video content of bikinis to keep the money rolling in. Unless those bikinis are willing to turn spanners in the bilge, he had to get a different boat.

There is a difference between videos of people wearing swimwear in public and videos of a women wearing a bikini to do a complete engine rebuild while holding a brand new (complete with purchase tag still on it) and perfectly clean open end box wrench that won't fit ANY of the bolts in the engine bay.

Sex sells. Scantily clad women imply sex. The channels that promote scantily clad women on the video cover shot do better than the channels that have a boat gliding through the waves on a perfect sunny day in the tropics. This is fact and reality.

I'm not adverse to women in sexy swimwear. I like to look at them as much as the next guy. What I don't do is try to cover that up with meaningless sayings about how "hot" it is where they are instead of acknowledging the truth that the reason they're wearing a bikini isn't the heat, it's the sexiness they're trying to sell you in their quest for you boob advertising dollars.

Agreed.

I might pay to go to a football game but I'm not chipping in when a former 1st round draft pick goes bankrupt due to doing stupid things with his money.

This isn't a 'business model', it is a SCAM. Are the Nigerians asking for your checking account #, following a 'business model' too?

'Business model' implies a professional / legit method of earning an income.
For everyone: 'money is time'. That is not a valid excuse to ask people to send you their hard earned money to keep your SAILBOAT running, then use it to buy a motor boat.

Sailing Doodles fire

The latest one is the Zingaro almost sinking video. He’s filming and cussing while his crew mate is madly pumping on the manual bilge pump. Half way through his rant he looks at the camera and says, guys I’m gonna need some help with this one. I take that as a need for $$$$$’s.
I have no problem with people making $’s on their YouTube channels as I’m sure it’s a lot of work and a loss of privacy for them. But when it gets to the point of them expecting you to donate because of their lack of maintenance or bad luck........

Frankly, I have no idea why anyone would invest in someone else's dream. Invest your time and money in achieving your own dreams. You can watch his videos for free. Having watched a lot of his content, up until one of his dogs passed, I never found it to be more than mildly entertaining. Something to pass the time.

If folks like his content and choose to donate, ok then, their choice. It is just not something that I would choose to do.

Same here. Sounds very self-centred, but all those youtube channels only have marginal value. If they're free, they might be entertaining, but as soon as I have to pay for them, they aren't worth a dime. Sure they put a lot of effort into it, but so did my neighbour with his roses that made the street more pleasant. I wouldn't give either money because of it.

The only social-media / website I pay is Attainable Adventure Cruising mostly because it actually helped me save money and is it worth to me the $20 per year.

Re: Sailing Doodles fire

I just started watching his videos about a week or two ago... seems like a cool guy. He definitely learned a lot over the 5-6 seasons... his 1st video looks nothing like his recent ones. I give him props and sucks that this happened to him.

But... I also sailed from Caribbean to the U.S. without insurance coverage. When I left the BVIs, my Caribbean coverage ended and my U.S. insurance still didn't take effect. I crossed every "T" and dotted ever "I" to make sure I'm 100% safe, but there was always a little fear in me. I knew I wasn't covered...

If something happened, I wouldn't expect you guys to chip in and give me money for repair or replacement. I wouldn't start a GoFundMe or anything like that. I knew it was all because of the decision that I made.

Thankfully, nothing happened... but, I'll never, ever do that again.

Re: Sailing Doodles fire

Also, past 10k views... doesn't any YouTuber get paid like half a penny for each video view? So, even without donations - YouTubers with 100k+ views get a hefty check from YouTube even without any Patreaon donations.

Again... my props to him.

Re: Sailing Doodles fire

My pet hate is people caught in some sort of disaster who don't have insurance getting in my face for money or they search for someone to blame so they can sue.

I'm sure we have all at sometime been through a rough patch and thought about dropping insurance but I have always thought that is exactly the time you need it so I have found a way to cover it.

If someone takes a gamble and drops insurance then looses, I see this the same as being asked to reimburse a guy who has had a bad day at the casino. You make your choices, you knew the possibility existed to loose, you decided to take the risk but lost then think the world should bail you out. These are everyday nextdoor neibours.

He had insurance but not covered for where he was. I might, or might not, make that mistake, probably not but I get that it was a mistake.

It doesn't worry me that he gets on YouTube and asks for money or that people give it to him. I suspect in this case he got more money donated than he expected and he changed his mind and bought another boat rather than fix the old one. That's not good and I get that you might be upset that he didn't do what he said he would with the money. I also suspect that if you asked him for your money back he would give it back. I didn't give him any money so I'm not worried, I'm not sure I'd care even if I did.

The only people who have some rights here are those who donated unless your angry that he didn't tell you he was going to by a power boat when if he had, you would have donated.

There is zero chance that this idiot would give you your money back if you asked. Go ahead - I'd be willing to double your donation if he gives it back. It just ain't going to happen.

Had a stroke at a relatively young age... and, I'm sure when you get close to death and then live to tell about it... you appreciate LIFE a lot more.

Don't like him? Don't subscribe. Dislike him? Don't watch his stuff.

I for one enjoy the videos... but, at the same time, that $5 or $10, will put a few gallons of diesel in my sailboat, so that's where my money goes. But if my free view on YouTube helps him, then by all means... I'm all for it... I'm learning some stuff along the way, too.

I used to be jealous of these vloggers or YouTubers, because I felt they were making money for nothing... but there's definitely time involved and work involved in what they do. Maybe I'm just jealous and wish I could do the same?
