Re: Sailing Doodles fire
It's an interesting business model. I wonder how he recruits his "crew" and what their sailing resumes look like. It could be me but there seems to be some certain physical attributes required for the job. I also wonder if he shares his YT income with the crew? Making videos of decent or better quality really is a full time job but it pays well if you get your subscribers numbers up there. I'm not impressed by Boobie's sailing skills and as sad as what happened to his boat is, it was fully self inflicted.

Re: Sailing Doodles fire
Shares probably just as much as any other company does towards there volunteers. But self inflicted if a hold for an anchor breaks? Do you guys all have new boats? Last thirteen years so much stuff broke on me creating big problems I always am surprised how little goes wrong in cruising videos

Re: Sailing Doodles fire
Have you seen where his anchors are and how he secures them? Pounding to weather in 30 knots offshore, no deck inspection stated, dinghy still in the davits and had to be cut away, etc. etc etc. A lot of choices I wouldn't make.

Maybe I'm naïef the but it's not a hurricane, I would expect a normal mount to work. Dingy not super handy but when functioning as possible exit strategy not extremely bad. But would have not single handed if you can get the boobs on board.

Re: Sailing Doodles fire
The very last time I gave money to a beggar was in Montreal in about 1960.
In Montreal they line up neatly for buses. There was a line of about 20 folks waiting for the bus I wanted to catch, and I got on the end of it.
A guy approached the head of the line and gave each person something, working his way down the line. He got to me, gave me a small card and continued down the line. It said something like "I am deaf and dumb. On the other side of this card is the deaf and dumb alphabet. If you place value in this, please give me 25 cents, if not give me the card back." Well, I thought that was a good thing to know, the deaf and dumb alphabet, ya never know when you might need to use it. So I got out a quarter.
He'd gone back to the head of the line and was working his way down, collecting his cards and quarters. He got to me and I gave him the quarter. He brightened right up and "Thank you very much" he said..... and continued on down the line....

I had started a thread about how people carry their dinks on passages. I focused on catamarans since most all have davits.
Bottom line....nobody seemed to have a problem carrying the dink on davits during passages. Yes there were different styles on how the dink was secured, but nobody stored it elsewhere on the boat.
I have NO idea what the issues were with Boobie's dink. He wasn't sailing in particularly horrible conditions. He had a really nice new dink too. Wonder if it was ever found.

In an earlier video where he first got the larger Highfield with center console steering, he showed where he had trouble securing it in the davit. It was a pretty large dinghy and likely considerably heavier than the original design spec.
Frankly, I'm surprised more people with hanging davits don't have problems. There are several potential failure points (blocks, line, metal fatigue, cleats/stops, etc).

Re: Sailing Doodles fire
Most of the channels rely on shots of "bikini babes" to draw an audience. the more skin they show, the more subscribers they seem to have.
The channels that show people actually sailing don't do as well. The ones with the nicely maintained boats don't have nearly as many subscribers as the "clutzes" who can't seem to wash the deck down without a major mechanical system failure and a MOB drill conducted like the keystone cops are aboard.

Re: Sailing Doodles fire
Shiny boats in working conditions with old guys sitting on deck and sipping rum are boring. No drama, no action, not sexy. What do you expect?
Most subscribers are broke young dreamers, that cannot afford a shiny working well maintained vessel, they are interested in fixer-uppers, drama, action and boobs.

I stopped when I suggested to a homeless about job potentials and told me he can make more money this way. The worst was when a lawyer acquaintance wife died and he set up a college "go fund me" for his two kids, only to find out she had a million dollar insurance policy.
Finally, if people watch these sailing sights for the Ts and As....just go directly to porn. It is free and better.

The issues were it's a big heavy centre console dinghy (he even said during the video that when he bought it he wondered if it was too big for the boat) and it still had a 50 hp engine on the back.

Haven’t seen that thread or would have chimed in. One of the reasons that we sold the 9.5 AB Inflatables dinghy that our boat came with is that we couldn’t remove it for passages. We know have a fully deflatable 3.3m TrueKit Explorer dinghy and for most passages we remove and deflate it, especially if there is the potential for rough seas.
If we do leave it up, or with the previous AB dinghy, we always remove the engine, put a cover on it, and add wrap around webbing straps that secure it to the davits and frame.
For predominantly downwind trade wind passages a dinghy in davits is no problem. But for any mid/upper latitudes passage, especially out of season (hey SLV), leaving a dinghy on davits, especially with a motor, is adding a big risk.
How many people know what the weight rating of their davits is?
