Re: Russian Navy found Abandoned Sailboat
Definitely qualifies as salvage, and good luck paying the bill and getting it back from Russia. If it survives the tow.
Unless it was medical, it really is head-shaking how many boats are tougher than the sailors onboard.

Re: Russian Navy found Abandoned Sailboat
USCG says crew contacted them and reported the boat was "disabled". USCG requested cruise ship to divert and render assistance which they did. Does anyone know the actual difficulty the boat was in? Obviously from the video the boat has sails and was not taking on significant water. Perhaps a rudder problem?
There is a YouTube video ( Rescue of Embla by Nieuw Amsterdam - YouTube) showing the rescue of the two crew members. One is the owner according to the USCG web site.

Re: Russian Navy found Abandoned Sailboat
Wow.
Exceeding hull speed much?
There is no way that boat is going to tolerate that all the way back across the pond!

Re: Russian Navy found Abandoned Sailboat
We broke a rudder once and had to be towed home. Without the rudder the boat was swinging wildly like this one appears to under tow. Ended up rafting up to tow. These guys need to maybe put a drogue out the back so it will track straight.

Kinda hard to do in the middle of the Bermuda triangle. At least it didn't have a spade rudder...

I'm being a useless arm-chair admiral, no doubt.
I just mean that for all the rudder failures I hear about (the largest reason for for vessel abandonment outside of sinkings that I've heard about) an aux rudder of some type seems like a solid idea.

Russia has provided military assistance to Cuba for a long time; I'd imagine that or Venezuela had them over there.

bingo, you win the prize -- of bringing your boat back to shore.
Honestly, sometimes it seems some boaters just think they have insurance so don't worry about failures. I mean wouldn't you call and ask for a tow rather than rescue?
He might have had backup and that failed too, I don't know the facts.

It's tough because the point of the forum is to talk about things, but at the same time it's frowned on if you speculate too much.

I have a sailomat with a pendulum oar. It would be easy to lock the oar from pendulating (made up word). Then I could steer via air vane pivot arm. I doubt it would steer the boat faster than a few knots before being overwhelmed but at least I could make a little progress.

Ya...amen...Lets put it this way. You try to be as pro-active as possible. I know you are like myself...a hands on guy. Maybe these two were better at hands on the EPIRB than make-shifting an emergency rudder.
