Rudder seals and bearings

Greetings all,

I have a 2006 Elan 434 Impression which is coming out of the water in a few weeks. (Volvo Penta D2-55 with 130S-B sail-drive)

Can anyone steer me in the right direction in terms of inspecting and potentially replacing any seals and bearings in relation to the rudder shaft?

I would like to pre-order any parts so our time out of the water is reduced to a minimum to safe on costs.

Any other maintenance suggestions other than changing the oil in the sail drive?

Any advice will be appreciated?

Cheers...

Re: Rudder seals and bearings

First you must identify your bearing

Lewmar , Jefa , JP3....

I would suspect it’s a Jefa bearing , they are the dominant supplier to European production boats

Jefa has a catalogue of spare parts by boat brand and a complete description of the bearing and it’s maintenance

Re: Rudder seals and bearings

Inspect by grabbing hard low at the tip then moving hard side to side and fore aft.

Since the boat is 2006 and light built, I would also drop the rudder and inspect the shaft.

You can check if it is still watertight by tapping it.
