PROBLEM WITH SPRING IN WHALE TIPTOE MK. 4 FOOT PUMP

I have a Whale " Tiptoe Mk. 4 " Galley foot pump to rebuild. I bought the service kit that contains everything I need. I was able to disassemble the old pump and put in all the new pieces from the service kit. My big problem is to figure out how to compress the spring so that the threads of the upper unit and the lower unit will come together with the internal loaded spring in place. So, does anybody have any experience, or know of a website that I can go to that will tell me how to compress the internal spring while putting the Mk 4 pump back together again?
