Power Across The Atlantic

Do you have specs on the trawler. I'm very curious about fuel capacities, burn rates etc....

On the Rocks-Dauntless is a 42' Kadey-Krogen, single Lehman, 120 I believe. Carries 700 gallons diesel, he is running around 1500 RPM, approx. 6-6.5 knots depending on wind and currents. Burns around 1.3-1.5 GPH. My rough guess-the trip will be 475-550 gallons. The boat is stabilized using paravanes. Right now, they are approaching the half-way point between Nova Scotia and the Azores. They anticipated 12-13 days for the trip.

Thats awesome. I didnt know they could be that fuel efficient. Thanks for the info.

He actually had the fuel to go directly US to Azores but ended up with a Canadian detour based on weather and refueled so more than covered. That cut his longest run down to under 2000 nm.

Most from the southern east coast hop to Bermuda and then Azores. That crossing is about the same distance as his.

That trip is definitely on our future agenda. Might be 5 or 6 years in the future. Maybe even 7 or 8.

Jay, If I recall correctly he has two Lehmans.

He was tied up behind my store while he installed the paravanes.

I sent him a text message from my cell phone today and he replied right away.
He says "All is going as planned."

I'm blown away by the fact that I can communicate in real time with a guy in the middle of the Atlantic using a little thing I hold in one hand.

He reported seeing whales today. He expects to make land fall Tuesday. He's headed to Flores. He reports 1750 rpm, 7 knots, 3.8 nm/g.

A64Pilot, I he has two 120 hp Lehman Ford Diesels.

While I'm not absolutely positive, I'm pretty sure that Dauntless has a single 135hp Lehman. Very few Krogen 42s were built with twin engines.

So you must have to stop to change the oil every couple days on a trip like this?

Actually five were built with twins. I don't know about Dauntless though. I thought it had a main and an emergency system, but thought just one main engine. It could be one of the five however.

No, most don't change on the trip, just add and keep an eye on it. Yes, 200 hours would be a normal change interval but when it's 300-320 covered in such a short period it should be fine. Most do service their last port before leaving and then in the Azores. Horta is especially use to supporting trans-atlantic cruisers.

I was wrong. It is a single engine as he talks about "I shut off the engine".
