Please Donate VHF to Mexican Fishermen

HI, we are going on the Baja Ha Ha again this year. We are collecting clothing etc for kids as "give aways" around Baja, they are very poor down there. But we already have that in hand. What I think would be more than welcome would be some VHF radios for the Panga Fishermen who are very poor and in debt to the company. They often go long distances out to sea without any form of comms. The one item they seem to need is a VHF radio, preferably a handheld. So if you have one in working condition are are no longer in need of it please PM me and I'll give you the address here in San Diego to send it to. I have one that I no longer need to donate to set the ball rolling.

What is the range on handheld VHF radios now? 15-20 years ago it was around 5 miles. Wouldn't a full size radio be better? 5 watts isn't much compared to 25 watts.
But then again they'd need an antenna also.

Maybe ~1/3 of them do have ~8' whip antennas sticking up. Never peaked my head over to see how it was wired, but there's an antenna there.

I think practically speaking they'd rather have a handheld, given all the pros and cons.
