Re: Passing

At the risk of topic drift - refererring to someone as "The Late" XXXX has always struck me as a bit of an odd one, albeit very practical (in alerting folks to the status?! of the dead person). Not sure how unviversal that term is.

Can't believe nobody's yet brought up the Monty Python Dead Parrot sketch, with all the synonyms!

Re: Passing

I've noticed too that the term "passed" is used more nowadays than the term "passed away" which essentially is a less harsh way of saying died. I didn't start hearing the term "passed" until about 30 years ago and heard it more in the Afro American community. Am I wrong in assuming it started as an ethnic term?

The "late" Mr. Smith will no doubt be very late if you are going to wait for him. That definitely is an English term?

kind regards,

Contrast that with the term late as found in "police are searching for a late-model Ford Something".

Apparently, "late" in "late model" means "fairly new and recognizably so". I thought, due to the whole "death" connotation, that it meant "near death" and therefore meant "18 year old rusty beater with a Flintstones floor scheme".

My plastic is "classic", although my original engine is "late".

I like that idea, but it seems a shame to attend a wake, particularly your own and not touch a drop...
Might have the wake part annually, just in case

I don't like it, it's a lie. The dude's dead, he didn't pass anything. Polite or not, it's a lie.

I'm like D O J in regards to the late Mr. XXXX. After all he's the first one to the funeral, first one in the grave, but never leaves...

Re: Passing

I've always thought the sailors version of dying was "drug his anchor".

Re: Passing

I thought that was "drogue his anchor"! I seldom pass anything sailing and don't pass up on a beer when offered and as for the gas ... I'll pass.

The only things I pass are gas and the odd kidney stone.
