Re: PAN PAN....OR PON PON

#197 : I agree that speech sounds different from person to person, but I don't believe one would pronounce pan-pan like pon-pon. I mean, these are the easy vowels that exist even in English language.

I mean, let's take Shaka Kahn (okay, you might know Djenghis Kahn), how would you pronounce that, Kohn? Kawn?

Good one ... this might not add much, other than more confusion to PAN-PAN discussion, but it illustrates the complexity of human speech and difficulty when it comes to transcribing the same sound across the world.

You spell the same sound as Shaka Kahn or Djenghis Kahn, I am familiar with another English language spelling which is Genghis Khan. In my native language the same sound is transcribed as Czyngis-chan or Dżyngis-chan. The "chan" part very much rhyms with "pan".

I think I understand what is the sound deviation between "pan" and "pon" you are referring to by using Kohn? Kawn? example. Yes, it's not the same ... my brain decided to disregard it, very much like when our brains disregard the typos and misspellings when looking for meaning.

BTW, next one takes the prize ... 200!!!

Re: PAN PAN....OR PON PON

So, which is it, Pan Pan or Pon Pon? I'm not sure if I should say Ping Pong or Table tennis.

--worst part is, I looked over the transom to spell the name--and some dumb bugger had written it upside down.

It's time to move on...let's get back to real topics... Whatever happened to the guy who dreamed of sailing to Bermuda while riding his motorcycle? And, the guy who wanted a free sailboat? Now these are very very important topics!!! Get with the program! Mauritz
