Opinions on a rail mount fender holder?

I’ve seen these on power boats but never a sail boat. Must be a reason. We’re finding our new to us Catalina 34 has less storage for large items then our Mariner 28 did, and this is one possible way to move bulky items out of the cabin. Good idea, bad idea?

Power boats tend to out them on the bow, where they could be a real issue for the jib. Do you have room at the stern?

That’s what I’m thinking, or maybe on one of the stantions just forward of the cockpit I’ll have to take a good look at where the jib sheets run this weekend. It would be handy to have them right there when you need them and out of the way otherwise.

Re: Opinions on a rail mount fender holder?

As noted, might be an issue for your jib. But if below the height of your lifelines, might not be a big deal as the Jib has to clear them anyway. If your jib is low cut, would put unnecessary pressure on the stanchion when sheeted inside. You might have no issues if you mount it a couple stanchions back from the bow. Kind of dependent on your boat and the cut of its jib.

Yep, power boats don't have lines running all over the place that could get snagged.
Think lazy jib sheets, spinnaker sheets/guys, main preventers ... all of which can end up anywhere while manouvering.

Re: Opinions on a rail mount fender holder?

My moody came with a rack for two fender. 8x22. The rack was inside the push pit but I flipped them to the outside. I now I need 4 fenders at my slip so while I’m sailing the two fwd fenders which are hooked to the lifelines with clipsc and they go in the rack and the two aft fenders just get flipped inside the rails or tied to the rack

Not a hateful look. Function over form and all... but with a center cockpit being at the pushpit, they are generally out of the way

Re: Opinions on a rail mount fender holder?

I've occasionally seen them on the pushpit rail of a sailboat. It's an out of the way spot for them. I've got holders on the inside of bow rail, but I've got a power boat with plenty of foredeck space.

That doesn’t look bad at all. We’re on a mooring so only use fenders occasionally.

I like the rail mounted fender holders on each side of bow of my powerboat and store spare fenders there. Most sailboats bows are narrow and one would crowd the walkway. You can tie the fenders off the stern rail and have them rest on the stern transom, if they cannot be stowed in a lazarette. That said, my fenders are kept tied off to a stanchion and laid down on the deck on each side of my Hunter 46 since we have enough room to walk around them AND I do not like spending time to stow them Spare fenders are either tied off the stern rail, resting on the stern lazarette and in the aft lazarette.

Re: Opinions on a rail mount fender holder?

The 15" spacing on our rails makes mounting them forward, rolling-hitched to the rail, a no-foul, out of the way installation.

Being able to just grab one would be convenient, but there's no way I'd put one of our 12x30 fenders in a bracket without tying it anyway, so, no expense...

So, ours are mounted just aft of the pushpit, before the first stanchion...

(Not that it matters but ours are line-through not, tied-to-end, style...)

Do you meaqn "pulpit"? (the "pushpit" is at the stern, the "pulpit" is at the bow.

Yes - and I knew that

Thanks for the catch!

Next to the pulpit in orientation.

However I converted the 24" lifelines to 30" SS rails; the big bumpers (12x30) fit perfectly between them. I tie them to the top rail, two on each side (we have 4)...
