Re: One thing I keep noticing about youtube videos...

I admire anyone who sails and is ok with showing us the good and bad....but many of the YouTube sailing videos only show nice looking younger guys with supermodel girlfriends and the videos often over time become travel videos, not sailing videos. I still appreciate them, but it's not really what I need.
In addition to Adventures of an old seadog, I'd also recommend "Sailing Britaly", "Adventures of Tarka" and "Wind Hippie Sailing" (since I am a single hander I prefer single hander videos).

Re: One thing I keep noticing about youtube videos...

there is a sailing metamorphism at work here.....you have to understand that...

just like a caterpillar emerging as a butterfly....

the young guy with all the hot babes...eventually becomes a grey haired old fart and settles down with one of the hot babes....also now showing her age....albeit with a little hair coloring here and there...ask me...I know

the fact of the matter is simple....get yer buns out there now...time waits for no man....

Re: One thing I keep noticing about youtube videos...

I doubt it. I reckon that a lot in their 20s and 30s will get rid of the boat after they've sailed around for 5 years or so and move on to the next thing, be it building a tiny home, off roading, kitting out an RV or similar.

The 'old farts' as you put it, are normally the ones that joined a sailing club when they were younger (at least the ones I've met anyway), so in some way have always been involved in sailing, or at least have some history in it.

Nice. Thanks for sharing. We are starting a Yourube channel that we hope to be unique and interesting to the sailing community. My wife and I are new to sailing and on a small budget. We just bought a 40 ft monohull here in New Zealand and are looking to sail around the world while learning along the way. Take a look if interested. If not, all good. We are having a great time.

Re: One thing I keep noticing about youtube videos...

I'm sure if you added up the revenue for the average YouTube sailing channel and compared it to the amount of hours spent to create the videos you would not deem it worthwhile to try making videos.

Sure, some channels make it big but I think it's largely owing to the fact that they don't focus solely on cruising but also include other adventures as well as parading bikini clad women in front of the camera with plenty of gratuitous crotch shots 🙄

Someone said it well earlier in the thread that sometimes you just want to enjoy the moment instead of constantly thinking of documenting it. For me, it makes much more sense to just make my money prior to casting off and just enjoy cruising thereafter with fewer limits on my attention.

If you want to make more money I'm sure you can come up with better ways

But hey, that's just my opinion, I could be way off base.

Re: One thing I keep noticing about youtube videos...

I agree with the observations as already stated in similar terms above...the videos making money are not about sailing they are about being on a cruise and activities, with an attractive female having fun in a bikini. Preferably with other female friends also in bikinis. Then again, no one asks "so when was the last time you did laundry?"

It's a fantasy for the landlubbers...but it pays for the boating. Guilt-free pleasure - you can tell your wife or girlfriend "I'm watching sailing videos" when it's really just softcore visual porn based on a boat.

On a side note...maybe that isn't a bad thing...how many people watch the videos and go "damn, if i get a boat that could be me with the bikini girl and having fun" and keep yacht sales, parts, maintenance and service businesses alive with impulse purchases...until the harsh reality of being stuck with solo sailing kicks in...very far from the initial dream.

A number of male people perhaps, but far fewer female people.

I, for one, wonder how many people watch these videos and go: "damn, it could be me in this bikini ..."

A number of male people perhaps, too.

More like they are about cruising. Sailing in a cruising fashion isn't really an exciting or strenuous activity. Just look at the average age of cruisers. It's significantly older than say people involved in athletic past times. Hence why many videos are more travel blogs with some sailing thrown in, and some maintenance, and rightly so in most cases. After all you could watch say a Dakar rider/driver from stage 1 to 12 only from their onboard cams. It would be boring even the for most hardcore fans. You need to see some landscape, a mishap or two, and where it fit in to the overall story.

Personally, I couldn't care less about the travel video aspect of it other than seeing some vast new landscapes. I like to see **** break and be dealt with.

Look up in the sky (pe) !!
It’s a bird (brain) !
It’s a plane !
It’s Supersailors.
Faster than a speeding drug boat.
More powerful than manatee gas.
Able to leap tall waves in a single bound. Sailors that come from another planet
With Powers far beyond mortal man.
Able to bend the Truth with a keystroke in Bare hands.
It’s KEN, BARBIE and the CAT.....YUCK!

Apology to Christopher Reeve. One of the nicest people you could ever meet.
Gracious to all the crew building his boat. Truly a Super Man.
Happy trails to him and his wife ...forever.
Mark and a manatee crew who will never forget building his dark blue boat.
