Okay, So Am I Completely Crazy . . .
I've put a lot of thought into this plan and by many standards will no be perfect for everyone else.
My plan is buy a boat. Sail of course because its more economical of what i want to do.
I'm going to try and have all my basic necessity items for survival (clothing optional of course depending on the weather). Everyone says that 10-12k per year is an average living for 1-2 people depending on what all is entailed on their journey. I myself don't really need a lot to get by on (such as hotels and marinas). Thanks to the US government for giving me the tools I need to survive when I don't have much. Before our time a lot of people sailed and live without a lot of the comforts we have nowadays and I'm going to try and make that happen again.
My plan is to leave the states with a few maps and of course a gps (which i know they didn't have back then taking it mainly for safety). I'm going to take about 5k with me (yes i will have a reserve for 911's only) but I'm going to point my boat in a direction and go. I will be setting up a web page to track my progression and keep sanity. But will be trying to enjoy myself while ruffing it the best I can.
Anyone who has an opinion on this and suggestions, I'm ready to hear it. I'm not gonna put a time limit on my travels. I'm goin to make sure that i have backup parts for my back ups. But want to see how long i can go and see before my 5k is gone... Looking forward to the pos. and of course the neg of this but maybe someone has done this and has had this dream that has valuable info that I can use.
Thx again

Re: Ok so am i completely Crazy or No
Jim, if I was 30, single and in good health I would just go. Lets be honest the US and European economies are stuffed for the next few years, so you won't miss out on rising house prices if you are away for 5 years.
Find a cheap boat about 30 feet, good second hand spare sales from e bay, box of tools and load of stable foods and head south. If it takes a year of work to put it all together then do it, the year will fly bye. How is your Spanish?
Bon Voyage
Pete

Re: Ok so am i completely Crazy or No
both but in this current climate there are many nice boats on the market in exotic places due to people underestimating the costs associated.

The clock is ticking on your life. Learn what you can for cheap -- keep crewing and help with a delivery or two. Good luck and fair winds.

Brad

Re: Ok so am i completely Crazy or No
Since the OP lists his location as Texas, if he is looking for "abandoned boats" from others who preceded him with the same basic ideas as he has outlined - he need look no further than the Caribbean, Central America, US Gulf Coast (Texas to Florida). There is no shortage of 30 (+/-) boats abandoned or being held for unpaid fees. There are quite a few just sitting out on mud flats or stuck in the mangroves abandoned and looking for a new dreamer.
- - A self-reliant (MacGyver) type person with a broad spectrum of mechanical talents can easily bring one of these boats back to basic seaworthiness (real basic) and then take off for an adventure.
- - So long as he avoids the big "tourist" islands/countries and stays with the "simple life" islands/countries his living costs will be extremely low.
- - But if the OP does not have the above mentioned capabilities and lifestyle habits, it is most likely that the plan will fail as quickly as it did for all those previous owners of the abandoned boats I mentioned.
