Assuming that's referring to my pictures, we were doing somewhere in the 16 - 17 kt ballpark for both of those. Going slow is relaxing, but sometimes it's worth the fuel / time tradeoff. And other times, it's just nice to let the boat get up and run when there's flat water and no traffic.

Sorry for the thread drift (maybe I'll add another photo as penance) but how was going through the Harlem River? I've read online that it's no problem and others that claim it's more dangerous than jumping off a cliff.

OK, here's a photo. Vineyard Haven during hurricane Sandy, one of the Black Dog boats in the background.

I'd say it was a piece of cake. We slowed down when we hit the first no wake zone and just stayed slow through to the Hudson. Although I don't have a big mast up top, so that makes it a little easier (only 1 bridge opening for me, rather than a whole bunch). Going through early on a Sunday we didn't see a single other boat in the Harlem River, so traffic was a non-issue.

The river itself is easy navigation wise, plenty of water. Can't remember off hand what the lowest depth I saw was, but I in one of the pictures from that run where the plotter is visible, we were showing 23 feet. There weren't a lot of people out on shore that early in the day, but the shoreline through there isn't anything particularly bad these days. Supposedly it used to be pretty bad between debris in the water, people on shore throwing stuff, etc. But NYC in general is a very different place than it was 30 - 40 years ago.

I'll throw in a few more pictures from the Harlem River transit to keep us on topic.

Know if the river has ripping currents on the tide change like Hell Gate? Might be an issue for a sailboat waiting for a bridge with less power and maneuverability than a power boat.

There's definitely some river current, but I don't think it gets above 2 kts or so in the worst spots. From a maneuverability perspective, if you time a transit so you get the current pushing you up or down the Hudson, you go through Hell Gate and the Harlem River against the current (assuming going from Long Island Sound to the upper Hudson or vice versa). The current wasn't particularly noticeable while waiting for the Spuyten Duyvil bridge to open at the Hudson end of the river. But I didn't go through at peak current.

I made the run through Hell Gate against the current, probably half-way between peak current and slack. At that point in the cycle, no weird swirls or other current issues to report. Only noticeable effect was that my speed over ground dropped a bit over a knot while going through that area.

Here's something you maybe don't see everyday...

Component of the Three Peaks Yacht Race where boats bottom out (in a managed way) while two of the crew temporarily disembark to run Scafell Pike (I was away running the 32-mile route - referred to as "a marathon with a mountain in the middle")

Then an impromptu "team meeting" (we were the first all-women team ever to compete).

Thank you - that did it! I used to collect rugby songs in my younger days so
let's see if I can return the favor ( or favour for you)

"There were four and twenty virgins come up from Inverness
And when the night was over there were four and twenty less"

And I'll get kicked off CF if I continue!
