New Sewing Group
Sewing Group started in the social group section
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...+projects.html
I was fortunate to have one of the CF members share their pattern for making a bean bag chair. ( thanks Senormechanico and wife!)
This got me thinking, why not have a social group for posting canvas projects?
So the sewing group is born!
I searched the social groups and did not see anything for canvas projects. I thought to keep this separate to sailmaking/repair, so if anyone would like to start one about sails, that would be great too.
I am sewing challenged, my talents are very limited in this area, but I am working on it. I thought this group could be a place for newbies like me can tap in to vast knowledge of this forum.

Re: New Sewing Group
Well I am not very good at sewing but I have a decent machine ( an Italian Singer.) So far I have done all the interior cushions and a series drogue kit from Sail Rite (that was a chore.). I am about to start on some outside canvas projects like a cover for the outboard and a hatch cover or 2. For me, Sunbrella from EBAY is the hot deal.

Re: New Sewing Group
Thanks Guy and WMarinecanvas
Everyone,
Please feel free to post a "how to" thread on the sewing group forum. Be sure to title the thread with the project, like "Outboard lid cover" or "Cockpit Shade Awning". I will try to keep all same projects in one thread, giving us several options on how to tackle the job.
*** Please look at all threads before starting a new one, there might be a thread about that particular canvas project already going. If there is a thread already going about your project, simply add to that thread. We want lots of different ideas.***
So far we have " Fitted Sheets" and " Bean Bag Chair", and " Blogs that Help". I'm about to post "Unique Curtain Ideas" unless someone beats me to the punch .
Cheers,
Erika ( born with two left thimbles )

Great idea Ocean Girl!
I have just posted on making a boom tent. The only snag I hit was that each post was limited to 1000 words, so I had to spread it over a few posts.
Your group will be a fantastic resource once it has built up a bit. I initially just didn't know where to start with sourcing supplies, so I have included this in my post as well.

Re: New Sewing Group
hey, I'm in! I just need to make the few remaining cushion covers, and then I was gonna start on the fitted sheets... Awesome!
I take it you've all signed up for the Sailrite newsletter, which has some great projects they send out free instructions for? I guess they hope you'll buy the materials from them!! Canvas and Upholstery Instructions, Videos & Tips for Boaters and Home

Re: New Sewing Group
Sulaire, I'm in the same boat! I've been itching to learn, hopefully I can start these projects soon. I scour old threads for little nuggets of knowledge, nice if we can have em all in one spot. I will do my best to keep the forum organized and user friendly.
I am recovering from a long illness which included brain surgery, so I can have some real whopper brain farts! Any input to help the group, or see a glaring grammar mistake , please let me know.

Yes the 1000 words is a pain, years ago it was 250, so is much better. Feel free to start a thread on "Sourcing Canvas and Hardware" then we all can add our own good find places
Thanks,
Erika

Re: New Sewing Group
Again, how I will separate same canvas project, like BBQ cover, from multiple poster is to post the sewing group avatar at the end of each project. If you peek at the fitted sheets thread, you will notice two different techniques for making fitted sheets. I separated them by a post with that big green singer avatar. I did this to help deter readers from accidentally mixing up the two different techniques.
I will load the avatar in our photo gallery so you can also sign off on the project when completely done. This will give the green light to the next person who might want to post an alternative way to make the same canvas item.
Make sense?

Great idea!
The only thing is that these social groups are hard to find (is the only way by going to "Community" and clicking on "Social Groups"?). It would be great if these social groups could be found when viewing the "Forums" section.
Maybe each time a new project is listed add a post to this thread so members who would not usually be looking in "Social groups" get to near about it?
