need help PRM gearbox

Hi,
I have a 80hp ford and a prm gearbox.
When I change from ahead to astern there is a load high pitched bang. I cannot see any shaft loose thrust bearing movement or anything that could cause such a bang. The gear box is new at two years old.
Any ideas what could cause this.
The shaft does not appear to move.
Thanks
Arrochar
