Need Help Finding a Boat!

Hi all!
I am planning on moving to from Hawaii to Florida to live aboard. Looking for a boat of 30 or so feet for 2 people to live aboard and go on extended cruises in the carribbean.

I am 24 but decently experienced. Sailed dinghies and crewed for a local club as a kid. Working on charter boats since 16, currently captain a Gulfstar 50. Fairly handy in the boat yard.

The problem I'm having is finding dedicated cruising designs rather than racer/cruisers in my price range. My favorites so far are the Cape Dory 30 and Rawson 30. If anyone could introduce me to some similar makes/models it would be greatly appreciated!

There is a Tartan 33 for sail in the classifieds of CF. Not sure as to the condition of this vessel. But, the T-33 will check most, if not all, your boxes

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

Thanks for the help! I've looked at a few tartans and really like the look of them. Very classy boats. They seem to have a great reputation as well.

The problem I keep running into is that most of the T30's have atomic 4's, and the T33's have wheel steering. I'm looking for a tiller and diesel which has been surprisingly hard to find.

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

Imho if you accept 30ft, you may as well look at some 30+ boats. There are fewer 30 and sub 30 decent designs but many nice boats in the 30 to 35 bracket.

Of the top of my head:

Valiant 32,
Morris 30 and 34,
Southern Cross 28, 31, 32, 35,
Vancouver 26, 27, 275, 28, 32, 34,
Victoria 30, 34,
PS 31, 34,
HR 29, 312, 32, Monsun, Rasmus, Mistress,
OE 32, L32, Strofidra, Allegro 30, 33, Overseas 35, Vagabond 31, Amigo 40,
Dufour 31, 35,

Plus countells light French or German shells, Allbergs, Cape Dorys, Pearsons, Tartans ...

etc. etc.

Just type the size bracket into sailboatdata database and have your pick.

You are what they call spoiled for choice.

Cheers,
b.

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

You may want to look at S2 9.1 if you want a fast
cruiser. It beats to weather very well. About 30 feet with good headroom has diesel engine.
Less room below but also fast is J-30. One is being autioned (on line) Nov 7,8,9
USWatercraft, Warren, RI ... get details from Scuttlebut.

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

Check out the Nantucket Island 33. Designer Peter Cole. For a 33 footer it has it all, Center Cockpit, cutter, two staterooms, two heads, beautiful interior layout, 6ft 3 inch head room and built like a tank.
I first saw one cruising in Mexico. If I ever wanted a smaller boat than I currently sail it would be one of these.
Good luck on your search.

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

Contessa 32, asking $37,000 (usd), located on Lake Ontario, Toronto Canada, but its an easy sail down the coast to Florida....and fresh water boat is very good.

Hans Chistian 38T, currently around $18,000 (usd). Already on the US east coast, just point the bow south. That is a sweet boat.

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

I know that my reply is not going to be popular, but here it is.

Look at the hunter 33, very roomy, not an offshore vessel (although it has CE class A), but will do very well for island hopping.

Sailed this boat at 40 knots winds, sailed her bigger sister in 50 knots.

The newer the design is the better it is, you will appreciate the 5 foot draft.

This is also the easiest boat to sail single handed, especially if you are a mid level sailor. Look at the mirror and be honest with your self, buy a boat for what you are not for what you wish to be.

Try to buy a boat that was used in fresh water, these are practically new boats.

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

Well, this all begs the question, what is your price range?
The Rawson is a big voluminous boat for a 30, stout, but not so fast... I have one next to me and my 29 looks pretty small next to her, which she is... that one foot can make a big difference!
I think many folks would say one should consider a more shoal drafted design for that neck of the woods... perhaps a Tartan 34C (I'd look for that one) or a Morgan 34 or maybe a Columbia 33 Caribbean (pretty rare) (these are some older boats for sure, but you can ram into things and bounce off.)
I'd certainly recommend my Columbia 29 too, but if you like a Rawson you might find mine too petite. More nimble though!

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

Thanks for the replies everyone. My budget is 15k so I don't think I'll be able to get into "bluewater" brand. I would definitely be open to something larger than 30 ft but id rather buy a ready to sail 30ft than something larger that needs work.

This boat doesn't need to be a "offshore" boat. But that being said I want as much seaworthiness I can get for the small amount of money I have. I'm not a fair weather sailor. I like being out in the rough and need a boat that can get me home.

I'm planning on moving in summer/fall of next year so not looking at purchasing something just yet.

Thanks for the heads up on freshwater boats. Being from Hawaii we don't have any! What is the process for getting a great lakes boat to the Atlantic?

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

You might be surprised just how much boat and "bluewater" you can get for $15K especially if you don't mind a little DIY.

Re: Need Help Finding a Boat!

Howdy and Welcome Aboard CF!

I recommend looking at the many boats profiled in the following ongoing thread. It will show you some "best examples" of boats that are under $30K Asking Price with many below $20K too.

Many of these boats are common, so what you see in these profiles will help you get some idea of the boats designs, interior, typical specs, and photos of some in good to very good condition.

If you look at the thread, I encourage you to start in the beginning and work your way through, to learn about boats you may not know, brands and models you may not know. Since you have plenty of time before you are ready to buy one. Some of the boats in the thread may have already sold, but the information profiles should still help. That is why I add them.

At the same time, you can jump to the last page to see a few that are well equipped and inexpensive, and were more recently posted for sale, including one on CF today You may want to increase your budget.

Good luck, and I hope this helps and you enjoy your time on the forum.
