Need a Surveyor, Please !

Hi,
tried on another thread but got no replies; I made an offer on a boat of my dreams (or so I believe...) and the offer was accepted!
I now need a surveyor if anyone could please recommend one, I think the wrong way to go about this would be to ask the broker...
The boat is located in Rhode Island, so anyone can think of a surveyor in the area, or the adjacent states such as Connecticut, Massachusets, New Hampshire, New York..?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Erik

Re: Need a Surveyor Pls!

Just brought a boat up at New Bedford, MA and used a surveyor from Gloucester, MA.
He was fantastic- this is the third boat I brought in my life time and the best survey I've had done. Name is Gene Barnes from E.F. Barnes Inc. 978-281-6040

Ask your intended insurer...

Check with your intended insurer. Some have a list of approved surveyors. I've seen one on the Boat US site.

Re: Need a Surveyor, Please !

Contact George Gallup - 781-598-5465. He is the President of the Surveyors Assoc. We used him for a survey in Boston and he was exceptional. If he cannot do it he will probably offer some good suggestions. Good luck.

Gene Barnes surveyed my past two boats. He knows what he's about and provided a very helpful assessment. In both cases, right on the money. I might also mention that he also owns a gorgeous Hinckley that demonstrates his good taste.

Check SAMS and NAMS listings on the web. These are the two certification agencies in the US.

Do NOT ask the broker for a surveyor. He would most likely be a friend or brother and I am sure you can figure out what will happen.

He surveyed my boat too, and while I like him and think he did a good job overall, he also said the chainplates looked okay -- they turned out to be original, glasses-in (so impossible to inspect), and completely rotten.

Two of them broke in half when she slipped in the sling, and they were rusted from the inside out.

So, don't trust anything he says about the rig. He should have recommended replacing them and all the wire, which I ended up doing, but if he had, I might not have bought the boat -- he was recommended by the broker.

I'll do my own surveys from now on.
