Need a Place While Looking for Boat
Hi everybody,
I am more or less a newbe here, but I am looking for help to find a place to stay while I look for a boat. I will be in St. Petersburg for sailing classes, when, is still up in the air but at least by the end of summer. I have been reading alot on CF and believe my best bet is to live there while I look v/s using a broker or relying on the owner. I have learned a lot reading your postings and thank you all for the information that would otherwise take time to get.
I am looking for a room for rent, or a cockroach motel that is cheap. I am not a rich man, I used most of it taking care of my father in his lasts years. If anyone knows of something I would appreciate it. This is a dream of mine and I now have a chance to do it. I have been on the internet but those listings are for $400 wk. Thank you for your time.

Re: Need a place while looking for boat
be careful on craigslist... do NOT send any deposit/upfront money ahead...
I learned to my chagrin a few weeks ago that there are MANY spammers offering shortterm rentals on craigslist.
check spamwarners.com for names, domains and emails that are scammers...
it's an expensive and painful lesson.
Anyone know of small flats in london or paris avaliable in june....
*sigh*
cause we still haven't found legit places to replace the once we got scammed on...

I am contemplating actually buying in the Tampa area and have found that City-data website invaluable in getting insight. You might post on there.... people seem to be very helpful.

What was the damage? Or do you not want to talk about it.

*growlin*
of COURSE I don't wanna talk about it. It's just plain embarassin is what it is... to the tune of about 800us...
And I am scrounging VRBO and home away etc for london May 31 to June 4 and Paris June 11 to June 16.
But at this point pickings are painfully thin... I am hoping that some last minute deals pop up... sometimes vacation rentals get discounted if they are not booked at the last minute...
Right now what I have is an inbox full of *sorry we are booked for those days....*
*sigh*
really. You have no idea how stupid I feel...

I will need a place to stay until I find the boat I want. I live in northwest Iowa, so coming down to Florida every time I see something I might like would be expensive. Thanks for you post!

Re: Need a Place While Looking for Boat
home away is a great site, and there are many florida listings... they do by the week and by the month... are you planning on staying in florida full time while looking for a boat or come and go?

Re: Need a Place While Looking for Boat
I'm not sure I've thought this through but here is my idea. Buy a motor home to live in until you find your boat. Sell the motor home to pay for the boat. I can see problems but if you can sell the motor home for close to what you pay for it, it might be a very cheap way to live for a few months. Florida is full of motor home parks that people live in for the winter and go north in the summer. Summer rates are pretty cheap.

Heads up; Gumtree is as rife with scammers as craigslist.

Not keeping boat in Paris...
We found a lovely hotel in the 11th Arrondissement.
Hotel De Nevers
Central, cheap, nice, English speaking and walking distance to most places (sort of). Metro is near by.
You may not like the cats, but they weren't as much in evidence as the photos suggest. The nearby supermarket sells acceptable chocolate.
One of the most pleasant hotels that I have ever stayed at, but then I do like cats.
The apartments looked good at first, but when I checked the conditions there were many, many things that could go wrong. One needed to be in a hotel first, then to negotiate from there.
