Re: missing children on sailboat

Has Cuba ever extradited to the USA, or at least in the last thirty years?

Re: missing children on sailboat

Looks like we have an extradition treaty on the books with them, but they don't generally abide by it, except in a few cases.

Re: missing children on sailboat

USA doesn't respect this treaty, why should Cuba?

Especially in a case like this, where their press/TV can put such a nice narrative on it. Parents and their child escape from the evil America to the Island of Freedom, or something along these lines.

Re: missing children on sailboat

Cuba has an extradition treaty with the U.S. American criminals who flee to Cuba are routinely returned. They haven't gotten away with anything yet. We'll see.

And the U.S. does respect the treaty with Cuba, except in the case of political refugees. Criminals who flee Cuba to the U.S. are routinely returned, at least in the cases where Cuba wants them back (which they often don't).

Astoundishing! Authorities knew the departure point shortly after departure and the speed capability (snails pace), and that it had to clear Key West or Dry Tortugas to escape US waters. That had radar, helicopters, Coast Guard, DEA, civilians on lookout, an Homeland Security!
How could he slip under the search net?

Reminds of Wanderer to the South Pacific with Sterling Hayden and his 'stolen' kids.

well the parents certainly won't be doing any drugs there, apart from maybe the free prescribed one's

it might just be the break the family need to get back to a normal family life, without the repressive, retributive, impersonal system of justice, coupled with no jobs that have led to many families to fall through the gaps in a nation with severe economic problems

Interesting how this might play out considering the Elián González affair. My guess is that they will be sent back.

Actual career criminals - for sure. Cuba has no profit in keeping them. These guys are no more criminal than people who steal boats or kidnap airplanes to flee from Cuba to FL, and they are a nice little "refugee TO Cuba" story. If Cuban government extradites them, I'd find it strange.

As for drugs, I'm told that MJ is cheap and easy to come by on the island.

Obviously you haven't seen the rap-sheet on the father. He clearly is an "actual career criminal."

I mean, for God's sake, he held a gun to his mother-in-law's head and threatened to kill her. Is that no big deal so long as he doesn't actually pull the trigger!?! I have to say that I'm really surprised by how many people are willing to give these losers a pass on their history of arrests and convictions.

This guy really is a monster!

He was found with a small amount of marijuana (personal use) and he had a weapon! Good thing they got those kids away to a life in foster care.

Some do-good Social Worker with too much power has really made a mess here. Hope this family is happy in Cuba, as long as they're together.

No, I haven't. All I have seen was "imprisoned on drug possession charge, and lost custody of his children". That didn't sound like a career criminal.
