Great story! I hope he gets to see the world.
Another great reminder though to not wait too long to follow your dreams.

Re: Message found in a bottle in Nova Scotia
If the pic in the story is the actual bottle, why is the label so well intact?

Re: Message found in a bottle in Nova Scotia
Good question. Recent death? And how would one get the note & bills out of the bottle with the ashes? Or, bottle, notes, & letter inside another bottle? Or incorrect reporting? Who knows!

Re: Message found in a bottle in Nova Scotia
Peut-etre, the whole thing is a hoax. The bottle WAS in good nick, and although you could get the ashes out easily, perhaps the paper, not so. Now, I'm wondering if those weren't campfire ashes, after all, we have only the word of the note that they are "dad's".
Has any reputable source confirmed that the ashes were human, or was that inferred from the note?

Re: Message found in a bottle in Nova Scotia
Ann, supposedly the media confirm details before posting a national news story--and it did hit the national news--but someone may have cocked that up. Or not.

Re: Message found in a bottle in Nova Scotia
It's a great story. I hope we never find out it was faked. Who needs a better excuse than this to open a bottle of tequila? Still, the condition of the label and contents suggest he hasn't gotten far in his travels. I, for one, will be rooting for him to make a complete circumnavigation, with plenty of stops to quench his thirst along the way.
Now, from the East Coast of NS/Cape Breton, I'm thinking you want to catch the Gulf Stream and avoid the Labrador current to make the first leg an Easterly crossing. Some of you blue water sailors can chime in here and recommend routing from there, or correct me if you've got a better idea

Re: Message found in a bottle in Nova Scotia
My guess is that since it was Canadian money and found on a Canadian beach, that its legit but just hadn't travelled far yet. Probably was tossed quite near where it was found. If not dropped from a boat, chances are that it will wash right back up where it was tossed. So hopefully, whoever found it will take it a bit further out and send the old gent back on his trip.

Re: Message found in a bottle in Nova Scotia
Perhaps the fact that it was found on the East Coast of Canada with Canadian Currency inside, explains why the label was still in good shape.
I doubt it is a hoax. I set my father adrift in the Med. Who knows where he is now.

Re: Message found in a bottle in Nova Scotia
..any excuse is good to share a good tequila.. I would suggest mezcal directly from the hot land of Sonora but a good Cabritos Reserve is a good option.. Then put the guy ashore at gulf stream and send him to Europe...

Re: Message found in a bottle in Nova Scotia
Very cool story, my mother and father were put in the Pacific together, as ash. My dad had to wait 23 years for mom to join him in death, commingled in the web of life. I hope this old boy gets to see the world through the bottle. So I guess if you find it, have a drink with him, put a few bucks in the bottle and send him on his way!

That was either crude or rude or had no taste?
