Leaky steel water tank

We have a 20 yr old 35 gallon steel water tank that is only accessible through a top port that has a slow leak. It is inside a fiberglassed area. We are thinking the best way to solve this is to find a potable epoxy and paint to seal the inside of the tank. We are unable to find a product to accomplish this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Lots of opinions on this. We did the same and were unable to find, in paint technical sheets, any reference to potabilaty of water stored in a vessel painted with the products we looked at. Nor did we find food grade epoxy. In the end we just used a quality two part epoxy and let it ventilate for a week before using it (fans). Never had any taste. Not sure what it doing to my internal organs.

Re: Leaky steel water tank

They do make epoxy products for potable water tanks now

Here is a link for some products at Progressive Epoxy:
https://www.epoxyproducts.com/potablewater.html

Never used these particular products yet but have been keeping an eye on them for possible repairs for our tanks down the line.

Found many more than just these doing a general internet search w/ "potable epoxy".

Re: Leaky steel water tank

Thank you for your help! We ordered the product, have sanded the tank and are ready to paint tomorrow! Hopefully this will fix the leak!

Re: Leaky steel water tank

Too late for the OP, but for anyone else searching, ultra slow cure epoxies are, apparently, mostly free of the nasty stuff, but either way, coating the inside of the tank after the epoxy application with a potable tank sealant such as made by Sika solves the problem at a very reasonable cost and very little extra effort.
