Kindle Paperwhite

Is the Kindle Paperwhite e-reader really easy to read in bright sunlight in the cockpit of a boat? I'd prefer to purchase a tablet that is e-reader compatible, but I love reading in the bright sun of a cockpit. I want to purchase the best equipment for that purpose.

I have a Touch and yes you can read in sunlight. Love the screen. The paper white is backlit and I hear that is pretty nice. Really like the weeks between charging. Great feature.

Yes, the Paperwhite is great for reading in sunlight! The older Kindle screen was "ok", but nothing to write home about. The Paperwhite was a game-changer. We're tossing any book that we haven't read yet that has a Kindle version because of the Paperwhite.

Almost all our magazines are read on the iPad.

I have a Kobo Touch which is also the 'paperwhite' technology, and yes it's quite readable in sunlight. I quite like it. They're under $80 now, and last a week or two per charge.

There's a screen technology out there that combines a colour, backlit display for normal conditions AND a low-power reflective, black and white paperwhite display for direct sunlight. That could be ideal for one do-everything tablet... but it's still quite expensive at the moment. So, for now - two devices; tablet/laptop and an e-reader.

The screen is really good. It is very readable in bright sunlight and fine with the backlight at night. It is a good e-reader, it is not a good tablet. The browser sux and crashes on even the simplest websites. OK in a pinch to use the browser, but not for anything that needs to get done.

Love the Paperwhite. I read out in bright light and in the dark. I had a nook before but the lcd was tough to read in sunlight.

But this is pretty much all it does. It is not like a tablet.

Believe they make two paper white models. One does not have a backlight so is not readable in the dark. The one with the backlight works day or night. Have the first edition which works fine with some light. It needs an expensive cover with built in light to use the dark, however.

I loved my paperwhite right until the moment the leak down the mast drowned it. Good thing I kept a couple of paperbacks as backup. Now I have a new paperwhite but I still carry a backup just in case.

I was just laying out in full sun yesterday on my stomach to get a little color and was reading with it just fine. Then I read last night while hubby was asleep next to me and he never even was bothered with the light. It's AWESOME!!!

Just a comment about the Kobo Touch above as its misleading..

The Kobo touch is NOT PAPERWHITE technology. Paperwhite is a propriety technology that is owned and patented by Amazon. Paperwhite is the method used to provide the backlight on the screen in a very low power way..

However.. The Kobo touch does have E-Ink technology, which is the actual display technology. With that being said, there is no comparison between my Kobo and my Kindle Paperwhite. The Kindle Paperwhite has a much better E-ink screen. Its sharper, easier to read and has a deeper contrast.

They make different versions of the Kindle. The one that they call "Paperwhite" has the backlight. Any Kindle Paperwhite will have the backlight. The other version--just a regular Kindle--does not have the backlight.

Yeah, but using the backlit screen eats battery power. I can barely read a book without having to recharge.

Using the screen non-backlit I can go a week without charging.
