Re: Keeping CF pleasant

I now treat putting someone on ignore like I do about reefing sails. If I think about it just do it. Most of the people on my list have come and gone. Those that remain earned they way over the long thread.

I feel CF was friendlier back before we had to be so friendly. That is definitely the reason a lot of the members who were very active 5+ years ago have left

The "be nice" rule was our very first [circa 2003].

Re: Keeping CF pleasant

One thing that I've found makes some forums friendlier is a "like" button.

Believe me, I know all the arguments against this. I don't want CF to become another FB!

But it doesn't have to be like that. The ability to do a quick click to reward someone for a helpful or courteous post gives the poster a warm, fuzzy feeling which makes them want to do that more often. Maybe it's that brain chemistry stuff.

Seeing others get "likes" for positive posts steers everyone in that direction.

The "thanks" button is great, but it's for more intrusive. Basically we're being asked to compose an e-mail to that person. There are times when that is appropriate, and I do use it when warranted. I certainly don't want dozens of people sending me "thanks" for every good post (assuming I ever manage to make one.) Just a count of how many people found a post helpful would go a long way toward rewarding good behavior.

That's what the Thanks button does.. it say's you liked the post..
Addendums are not obligatory but are sometimes nice to get and give that 'warm fuzzy' you refer to..
As for Likes/Thanks, that's easy enough to find totals of members helpfulness, click on their name and check the Green bar.
Why the need for folk to see how 'warm and fuzzy' you are in the moment..

I feel you OP. Nicely said.
Sailing is way too relaxing for what some people are on the Internet for.
If you’re tempted to let individuals know they are being annoying don’t. That’s volunteering to be an unpaid therapist.
Hit 29C Saturday first spring check out run, my therapy.
I’ve never been on the joke thread. That it’s closed is not funny.
I do like the backyard mechanic comradely. Still in these help wanted threads there will be one or two people fact checking things they know nothing about to establish an illusion of superiority. Masters at google opinions but not contributing to the thread insulting and argumentative. It’s their thing, therapy time.

Re: Keeping CF pleasant

So this thread got me thinking so I looked.

I have 73 people on ignore. Probably less than 10 of those are active members. I looked at those and most had no CF "friends" and the ones that did a good number of them were also on my ignore list.

The ignore list here would be much better if it really ignored people instead of no showing their post at all.

I’ve noticed a pattern of if people don’t answer the OPs question and maybe get off task a little the OPs get aggressive.

ISTM that it's more often the case that the OP gets aggressive when he doesn't like the answer(s) to his question. (Generally it's a new member, but not always )

Agreed.

Too many times you see OPs get defensive when a member suggests something they don’t wanna hear, they don’t give credit to the poster who at least tried to help, if you don’t want to take his/her suggestion then move on, no need to berate said poster.

All kidding aside, I find it interesting when one of the long time "always right" members add their comments to a long thread and nobody responds to him...or should I say see's him.
