Jib furler problem

Just bought this Catalina 27. Yesterday I see a lot of slack at the bottom of the jib. Appears the jib which is on the Harken furler has slipped down the stay.

I can't see what happened up there

Umm... have you tightened the jib halyard? good place to start1

FG, not sure how acquainted with these systems you might be, but normally the jib halyard is left attached and tensioned to the upper swivel on a furler. There is no situation where the jib is still installed on the furling stay and the halyard is tied off at deck level. Something is awry here if your observation is correct.

The Harken diagram (of"0" furler) looks like there is just a short cable holding the top of the furler not a halyard and my halyards don't appear to be attached in any way to it. is the only way to fix it involve climbing the mast? Whats the best way to climb it?

Start by doing research or if you don't want to do that call a rigger. Under the "search" button there is a "google custom search" that should find you lots of information on climbing masts.

fg, how do you think your jib got pulled up the foil? A halyard was needed, and is normally left attached to the upper swivel and kept tensioned. One would have to go aloft to disconnect the halyard. I have no idea what is going on in your instance, but having the jib come falling down the foil suggests that the halyard is indeed not connected... and it must be for the whole thing to work properly.


There have been many discussions regarding mast climbing here on CF, and a simple search will garner y ou more ideas than you will want! If you are a normal size person, going up in a bosun's chair attached to your main halyard may work, but on a light 27 foot boat the gear may not be adequately strong to do that safely. If you can convince a nearby 12 year old to go up, the stresses might be more manageable... and they would think it was cool, too.

Oh... a link to the Harken diagram you are looking at would help us visualize things. Better yet, a good photo of your setup !

If you have some lensing a photo would help. As Jim said it has to have a halyard to raise it up the foil. Perhaps yours has disconnected and the halyard needs to be replaced though I suspect the sail woud be in a pile on th foredeck if that were the case.

Mate, I have no idea how your jib halyard came to be secured and your jib top swivel still aloft, but if you lower the sail (claw it down), then you can put the halyard on the swivel and re-raise the sail. Then furl.

This is all simple mechanical stuff, as you see it work, you'll understand it. If it doesn't work, then that's why the halyard was disconnected, and if you don't ave someone else savvy about, you might need a rigger.

Sometimes it is humbling to have Ann on board! What she suggests is, of course, the obvious and simple thing to do... no mast climbing needed. I'm embarrassed...

But it still does not explain why the halyard isn't attached...
