Is "Seven Seas" a corny sailboat name?

My 1974 Westsail 32 was originally named "Seven Seas".
About 20 years ago the second owner named her "Rocinante" which totally doesn't suit me. I have had the boat for over 3 years now and am at a loss for a name for my beloved boat. I have never referred to her as Rocinante, only as my Westsail. I removed the vinyl lettering for topside painting but since she is a federally documented boat I feel pressure to re apply a name and hailing port before I start venturing away from her berth.
I'm not sure what to think about the name "Seven Seas".
Sometimes I consider the name "Meriwether" in respect for the great explorer Meriwether Lewis but I'm not sure if it's appropriate considering his alleged suicide, drug and alcohol abuse and severe depression albeit his achievements and exploration for America is outstanding.
Considering returning the name "Seven Seas" might be appropriate regarding the respect for the soul of my boat.
What are your feelings or recommendations?

Carl

The original name does not bother me, nor does Rocinante, but I can also understand the desire to change the name to make the boat your own.

A Possible new boat name by a single letter added to:

"Seven Seals"

Of course this has double meaning, one marine life, the other biblical.

Re: Is "Seven Seas" a corny sailboat name?

I'm not sure where, but I know that I've read that Meriweather Lewis "suicide" was considered a murder coverup by some people, something to do with Thomas Jefferson. Perhaps it was fiction.

I don't think the name Seven Seas is corny at all. I think it's a good name for a boat, in that it's clear and easy to understand on a radio and it's in English. That's just me, of course. I don't like boat names that have to be spelled out letter by letter. TOO cute.

You're likely to find a number of Seven Seas boats out there of course, since it is a good name. Our 30 year old boat is now on it's third name. It's also USCG documented, and I researched their database, the Brits databases etc. looking for a name that had never been registered in any of them. Wasn't easy, but S/V Twisted Sheets is the first of that name that I could find with extensive research. Probably fifteen of em in Tasmania or someplace, the way my lucks been running.

I have seen far worse boat names. If you like it, use it.

Sounds good to me..
But then I thought 'Lady of Spain' on a friends boat was pretty cool as well..

Re: Is "Seven Seas" a corny sailboat name?

I've kept the corny names of my last two boats. The Black Pearl (which was a 74- so obviously not named after Johnny Depps pirate ship). The Van was the next, named after the previous owners 70's vintage camper van that she replaced with The Van.

Here's the corny part, I didn't change the name of either boat because I didnt want to mess with the boats spirit or character. So what's cornier, a funny boat name or me genuinely attaching feelings and mystical elements to an inanimate object.

Re: Is "Seven Seas" a corny sailboat name?

Interestingly enough "Seven Seas" isn't overly common and more importantly it's not used on any other Westsails.
I'm not too crazy about it but do give it some consideration as its my boats original name.
It sure the hell ain't going to be Rocinante.

Yes, there is alot of controversy over Meriwether Lewis's death.
Meriwether might not be a bad name for a Westsail.

I once mentioned to my wife that I might use the name "Shakira" but she got that weird womanly attitude about that name.

I guess I should rule out ex-girlfriends names also.

No! That's not corny at all. I'm not at all superstitious but I do like to give respect to the soul of my boat. Who was it? Mortissier that insisted that a boat was a living thing? Or something like that.

All the boat's name has to do is satisfy you. Don't bother what anyone else thinks. If you like it, keep it. If you don't like it, change it.

Not corny at all. Now if you named it " Maize" that would be corny.

Monte,
Funny because my name is Carl and the letter c has been used 7 times in my family. I wouldn't name my boat "Seven C's" but it is kinda funny.
If I use the name it would be Seven Seas.
I have 2 children that I named with satisfaction but I just can't come up with a name for my boat.

How about "End of the Road"? You're in Key West, after all.
No more road can also signify 'ocean', as in 'no more land'.

Snort,
I have to admit I've never thought of using endoftheroad for my boat name.
Thanks.
Serioussly, endoftheroad is used in my life in many other places than a username on forums.
