I know there is an older thread on the America’s Cup with nearly 1000 comments, but it is filled with mostly technical comments on the new “boats” and difference of opinion regarding rules and challenges. Here I just want to discuss the Tradition of America’s Cup.
I lived in
San Diego during three of the America’s Cup races, and in 1998 I saw the first major deviations from the traditional
boats. Michael Fay tried to cheat (IMO) with a monster, and
San Diego defended the only way they could in the time they had with their
Catamaran.
I really like the 12 meter
boats, and even though technology marches on, I think that they should have stayed with 12 meter boats. Instead of a Technology
Race, it would be a Sailing
Race. Instead of being a race between Engineers, it would be a race between Sailors. IMHO, the new hydrofoil platforms are not boats.
