I’ll take “you bought a boat with too much teak” for 100, Alex
You know your boat has the appropriate amount of teak when you are still sanding on it in January

Don't think on my last boat I ever sanded the teak.
Some people like to sand I guess.

Cute photo Tomas1985, the joys of boat ownership.
I've done Varnish and Cetol on my teak, finally switched to Semco and couldn't be happier. Their prep-cleaner worked great and I didn't need to sand.

Sanding (or Scotchbrite-ing) teak is my passion (pun intended).

Spreaders. Looked good from bottom. When I went up mast tops had varnish completely gone in spots from all the UV.
So I’m stripping and refinishing. Ideally you get to it before this point.

Honestly, I find teak dark and depressing, and thus of negative value.
To each his own.

I am a real heretic - I painted my exterior teak.
And I plan on painting quite a bit of my interior teak also.
I'm just a rebel I guess.

A buddy of mine, and I, have decided to go into business, making truck bed covers, out of teak. The business name will be U-Like Products.
When someone asks what that contraption is on the back of your truck, you can proudly respond: "Wooden U-Like tonneau"

A traditional method with spreaders is to varnish the bottoms so you can inspect the condition of the wood but to paint the tops white to protect from UV. My last sailboat had wood spreaders and I had them that way for over ten years.

The interior in my last sailboat was fake teak Formica with real teak trim. The trim was oiled so not shiny. Pretty dark inside. The Formica looked ok but not great so I painted it off white to match the fiberglass overhead and stripped and gloss varnished the trim. Made a huge difference.

the only problem with that is that it is a 98% no going back action

^^^^^Not necessarily correct. The recoverable way to do it is first, prepare the teak to accept varnish again. Give it two coats. Then paint over the varnish. When/if you want to go back to plain varnish, scrape it off with a putty knife and a heat gun. Works, and the two coats of varnish fill the soft grain of the teak so the paint doesn't get in there. The best colors paint I've seen over teak are dove grey (like weathered teak) and maroon, looked really nice.
@ capt jgw: We have friends with a Golden Hinde who did that. Really lightened the boat below decks, and does look spiffy.

100% positive I didn't say it was 100%
I have read of people scrapping off toe rail etc paint from teak. But never for a painted interior.
Not that it matters to me what people do to their boat.

Perhaps not really a rebel. I've always thought of interiors that had white bulkheads and (sometimes) ceilings trimmed with varnished wood (teak, mahogany, ash, whatever) as "Herreshoff" interiors. They've been around quite a while and are quite attractive (and bright). Then again - perhaps the Herreshoffs were rebels. If so, you're in good company. And it is, it is a glorious thing to be a Pirate King!
