Re: I found her on my rounds.
Until the 1950s the American Pit Bull was the most popular dog in America. Nipper, the RCA logo listening to his master's voice, was a pit. Pete in the Our Gang Comedy movies was a pit. Rin-Tin-Tin brought the German Shepard to prominence and then the TV version of Lassie popularized the Collie.

Re: I found her on my rounds.
TooCoys, that's a great looking little dog. I'm sure you already know, people have started dumping their older pets at the boardwalk, hoping some old softy will find them. I hope you guys have a great life together!
Kindest Regards,
Phillip
On the other hand...
Here Boy!
I think my wife can take 'em. She teaches 4 year-olds for a living. You should see *her*, "That's not funny." look!

Well, nobody has tried to steal our tender since we installed a savage guard dog in the bow.

Re: I found her on my rounds.
There is a two fold difficulty for me in boat owning and dog owning. I never seem to find a dog that likes long term living aboard and then there is the problem with traveling to other countries and meeting legal requirements.
My first issue negates the second but is always a consideration.
Life eh?

I found her on my rounds.
If you can find a copy of this movie, watch it. It is one of the better movies I have watched. It is very family friendly. It is the old South, and somewhat coincidentally a lot of it was shot on land I used to own

One of the quotes in the moves went something like this " knowing mans need of a friend, God gave him a dog"

Ah! A democrat.
Fear not what sits aboard. Look what lurks below!
And what might be below deck!
A neighboring boat has two PB mix dogs, and watch out, they might lick you to death!
At least it's not a lab or setter. Can you imagine being a lab stuck on a boat? It's like a child in a crib with toys strewn all around the outside of the crib!

Re: I found her on my rounds.
i find pb and pb mix raised by decent folks to be awesome dogs. it is the person raising the dog and training the dog that makes the personality of the dog and the danger of the dog. remember pits used to be nanny dogs until some joker trained em to fight .
dobies and german shepherds-- donot bring em near me. but pits and siberians and malamutes..oh yes and chow dogs..awesome..

According to the US Postal service more mailmen/women are bitten by chihuahuas than by pit bulls.

Re: I found her on my rounds.
Dogs are no different than people. Statistically certain breeds of people are more likely to be violent if you want to read into crappy statistics. I don't buy into that . But really, a pit bull is no different than people. It comes down to how you/they were raised and what is taught to be ok or not ok in regards to your/their actions.

Re: I found her on my rounds.
No.
An aggressive breed may attack even if raised in a peaceful environ. That's why we say they are an aggressive breed. They were bred to kill, to chase, to fight.
The balanced ones are only marginally dangerous (mostly when left not attended by their 'boss'). The coward ones are truly dangerous. They can get scared of anything and their response is always aggression. Also when their boss is present.
I grew up breaking in hunting and guardian dogs. My friends are professionally breaking in horses. I have seen many animals. Some are dangerous and in every 100 pitbulls you will have maybe 50% aggressive units. These should be put out while young.
In every 100 pointers you will find maybe 10 cowards. Their level of aggression is very low though and they can be kept as pets. Just make no use in the field.
Etc.
Older abandoned dogs are hardly ever trouble makers. We are blessed that there are people here who have heart and love for such animals.
