My Marina is starting the Hurricane Haulout for Isaac. My question is what should I do to ensure the best chance for my boat to survive a punch in the nose? Current plan is to haulout and put 6 stands on my 40 footer. I will remove all glass and bimini. Will keep the bilge pump on and all other DC power secured. Any other ideas? should be interesting.. not my first rodeo.. Hurricane Ivan 2004.

Fortunately we only got the outskirts of Ivan ... we remained in the water but I must say the sea was nasty enough to see ships dragging anchor in Road Harbour today ... caused chaos and two even collided (I took a few pics of it) but fortunately no serious damage i could see!

I think from what I have seen here, and I have been helping out to prepare a number of yachts for hurricanes, I would get a rate from a professional tie down crew to do the work ... may cost a bit of money but it saves a huge amount of hassle and generally they see to it that other boats tied down in the area are not going to pose a threat to your boat.

Hi, It might also be a good idea to remove all canvas / sails & anything loose on deck. In La Paz, MX when we had our boat on the hard we had done this.Those who didn't & who subsequently had claims into their insurance ended up not having their claims accepted. Not fair in my book, but that's the technicality the company used to deny all but one claim. So ever since we have continued to do so..It also give us a chance to inspect them for wear & tear..then away we go into repair mode.Good Luck..

I suggested earlier getting a professional crew to assist .. I still think that's what i would do next time around as things tend to get a bit hectic and one takes short cuts when not properly geared for this type of thing. However, a number of people asked me to write something on my blog about what I learned from the guys at Moorings charter fleet when we helped them to prepare their yachts for hurricane season ... I put together a few ideas and although I will add to that post and include photo's I hope that by sharing what I am learning from others it will provide some assistance!

Isaac not a tiny thing when he enters the GOM... Boat is on the hard pointed into the south east wind. canvas removed. 8 stands. Hope she makes it through ok.
