I'm not from your part of the world so can't really say. It might well be if you can make it an idyllic and tranquil trip. If so it could be the very thing to hook her for life.
I just don't think she'll be looking for an adventure for quite a while if she is new to sailing. If you frighten her the first time or two that will be the end. My wife has learned that what she thought was horrific in the beginning was nothing once she had come out the other side safely, and especially after I have gradually exposed her to more challenging conditions. Now she advises others that "today's not bad, and there's nothing to worry about."

There's a few boats I've had my eye on for a while. If I wasn't living in Germany now, I'd probably scoop one up right now.

I've followed these guys in my boat search since Kent went solo. There's several I'm looking at, unfortunately I can't afford too much at the moment so my list is down to three or four.

I think there are some really good boats in the area.
I just wanted to wish you the best of luck in your search Don.

Re: How to Explain to a Woman what Liveaboard Means ?

I recommend you have her read about it first!! My first cruising book was "The Cruising Life" by Jim Trefethen. If she is still interested after reading that book, then subscribe to a couple magazines and encourage her to read the articles. I subscribe to Lattitudes and Attitudes and also Crusing World. If she is still interested, you need to get her on the boat for at least a week! But be prepared. Even if she only joins you for a short time, you need to be sure you want her there and be prepared if she decides to go!

I think she must be pretty interested in you. i was not sailing four years ago, but if I were in her situation I probably would have said the same thing. in my case, the final decisions would be about you and me, not you and the boat.

But I also remember what I read in an article on line about living aboard. It was about couples living aboard. The person asked them, "What do you do when you have a big fight?"

The guy's answer was "Get in the car, go for a drive and cool off."

Hard to do at sea ...

Re: How to Explain to a Woman what Liveaboard Means ?

Found some interesting boats, this is all from same site. be sure to check out their photo gallery, they keep all sailboats ever advertised in a gallery, organized by make and model. It is a great way to see what the market looks like for that particular vessel model and other goodies like pictures.

Cal 33, 1972, Rockport, Texas, sailboat for sale from Sailing Texas
I love cals, good boats, sail very well, strong hull.

Islander 36, 1976, Bacliff, Texas, (South of Houston sailboat for sale
Islanders sail very well

Irwin 32, 1971, Corpus Christi, Texas, sailboat for sale from Sailing Texas, yacht for sale
Though I feel he is asking too much for her, he mentions several times the price is negotiable. May have a real deal, but I do not think she was ever brought up to Bristol condition in the real sense.

VIrtual vagabond- have you seen this vessel?
Steel Schooner, by Pool corp, 56', 1980, Saint Martin, French West Indies, sailboat for sale from Sailing Texas
Dont know anything about her, but the price may be very negotiable.

Morgan Out Island 33 sailboat for sale
Ok, yes it's an out island , but I have observed over the years that the only people who dis them are the ones who have never owned one, the owners seem quite happy with em. A slow boat, some quality issues, but a great live aboard and coastal/ Bahamas kinda boat and can find them very reasonably priced.

Hirondelle MK1, 24ft., 1970, Fredericksburg, Texas, sailboat for sale from Sailing Texas
For shallow draft, she looks rough but I bet can be had cheap.

I could go on and on, that sailongtexas.com is a great site, but it is nap time for me ( still recovering from surgery )

Cheers,
Erika

Re: How to Explain to a Woman what Liveaboard Means ?

More two cents

Teckha 66, 1982, Galveston, Texas, sailboat for sale from Sailing Texas, yacht for sale

May be a money pit, and I repeat, a real money pit, but she sure is ( or was) a sweet vessel, and doesn't deserved to be scrapped!

Re: How to Explain to a Woman what Liveaboard Means ?

Dear Don,

After careful consideration, I have to say this. Some people only love once, and it seems to me that your wife was everything to you, and still is. Maybe one day you will be able to accept someone else in your life, but you are not there now. The new lady does not stand a chance. It's not a matter of cruising, or living aboard, or leaving family, or living your dream - it is simply a matter of loving someone else beyond death.

So I say take your wife with you when you go cruising and you will know when you are ready to let her go. Then look for someone else.

Good luck to you, sir, and God bless.

Re: How to Explain to a Woman what Liveaboard Means ?

Ocean Girl,
You have just proven why I need to go to Texas to look for a boat. 4 out of the 7 you posted are well within my parameters. The steel schooner, cost too much. Hirondelle Mk1, 24', too small. And the Teckha, beautiful (was) but too much boat plus too much work.

Of the ones that meet my criteria, the Islander 36 is one I would defiantly take a long time going over.

Monica,
I agree, and I am not letting this present relationship get too far advanced. I can see the end now. 8-10 weeks from today I will be leaving. The current offer looks like it will go through.

Re: How to Explain to a Woman what Liveaboard Means ?

Beautiful love story alert.

Twenty years ago a sailor man had just lost his wife to cancer. He was so sad and just didn't know where life was taking him, unlike you Don, he was already cruising when his wife died. Anyways, one day anchored somewhere in the Bahamas he read a personal ad in cruising world. the ad was from a sailor woman who wanted a sailing adventure, she wrote that the oceans were waiting for her but she just didn't want to do it alone ( hence the ad). Something clicked in him and he responded to that ad with a most romantic And beautiful letter. He spoke of his love for his wife, he spoke of future adventures that he new awaited him. The sailor woman wrote him back. They met, they fell in love, got married on the bow of his sailboat, and sailed around the world together. That was twenty years ago and my parents still act like love sick teenagers.

When the time comes, my stepdad will be buried between his two wives. Mom says he will need two wives to keep him outta trouble in heaven :-).

Go play, adventures await

Erika
