Re: How to deal with aggressive ducks...

It could be worse. Ducks aren't as likely to sink your dink as a pair of sealions.

Re: How to deal with aggressive ducks...

We have resident flocks of Canadian geese here in Florida.

Nothing...and I mean nothing..intimidates them.

You often see them crossing roads here. They don't care if your car bumper is right in their face, they will waddle across in their own good speed and will not get out of your way for any reason.

Re: How to deal with aggressive ducks...

We have a problem with crows here, they like to perch in the rigging, on your masthead tri-color, etc...
That's not the problem though. They eat the berries from palm trees, and leave this purple colored poop on your decks, which is near impossible to remove without resorting to bleach..
I'll take a duck in the dink anytime vs. a crow in the rigging..

This seems to be the only serious answer to the duck problem (duck poop problem) and raising our dinghy always worked for us. We did have a dog on deck, but the ducks quickly found he could not get to the dinghy. The duck problem at the moorings is mainly an overnight attraction for the ducks. Unfortunately, the ducks also board the dinghies at the end of the Market Slip and lifting the dinghy is not an options. Here, we found it best to use the other dinghy docks where people were not attracting the ducks with food. We also found that leaving obstacles on our inflatable bladders... like, oars, line, jackets, pdfs. etc. made our dinghy less attractive for ducks. If we did leave our dinghy at the Market Slip; we found a long painter with our dinghy further out did help.

Re: How to deal with aggressive ducks...

Considering how little flesh one discovers under the feathers on plucking the average wild duck, the volume they can excrete onto a dingy is amazing.

Re: How to deal with aggressive ducks...

Back in the day...I lived in the English countryside for a while...Somerset....there was a farmer there that raised ducks...not to eat..but for their eggs..I thought I would give it a try.....
I thought the duck eggs were quite tasty..as compared to a chicken egg...not gamey or anything....just better tasting...

I did try eating duck, but overall didn't care for it...but the eggs were yummy...

Re: How to deal with aggressive ducks...

Canard a l'orange. They can be VERY tasty.

However, they are also protected many places. If you want to eat them, then toss a net over them. If you want to keep them off the dinghy, maybe throwing the net over the dinghy would keep them off it?

Re: How to deal with aggressive ducks...

Make sure the ducks are awake - prod them with a boathook. Get a net - or a large sheet of some kind. Cast it over your dinghy. The ducks will see it coming & take off. If they don't, they can become dinner (assuming they are not some kind of rare & protected species of duck.)
If they come back, repeat. Or buy a toy catapult & some soft projectiles (if you are feeling kind).

Re: How to deal with aggressive ducks...

My grandson has one of these (watch the video). Chuck one in the dinghy & wake the ducks up:
