Re: How Old Are We?

I'm on the younger side of the 61-70 group. That said, I am really encouraged by the numbers in the 71-80 yr group. I will hopefully meet my goal to cruise in a few years time, and it's nice to know, if I keep healthy and fit, that the lifestyle is still achievable for quite a few years to come!

Re: How Old Are We?

I'm on a phone, not sure how to do the poll thing, other than just put age down here. 50, started cruising more or less full-time at 40.

Re: How Old Are We?

I just realized that since I started sailing I've worked my way through all but the first age group. That's kinda scary!

Re: How Old Are We?

ok so i started sailing well before the youngest age groups listed and i am not included in any age groups now-- to 70 and from 71 kinda leaves out the likes of me n boaty and others our exact age. hahahahaha
so. appears i have been sailing longer than most and less time than some.
lately i have been repairing more than most and not as much as some, but i have a formosa so formosa my life i be fixing my formosa...
1948 was the very best year. seems some of the best of us were born that year. hell i managed to survive high income and lowest incomes and still breathe..homelessness and happiness all of the extremes between ...
i even got to learn to sail engineless with gaff rigging... hahahaha

so. training ship and current and final ship.... i think i dun gud.
age aint nothin but a number...to quote saffire and some others.....
but some days i is OLLDDD. dayum. sailing is easier than aging i swear

Re: How Old Are We?

Not surprised to see the large percentage that are between 50 and 70. Pleased to see the number that are even beyond that.

Re: How Old Are We?

In the 71-80 range! I became a member of the Cruisers Forum in October 2003, but generally too occupied to post.

I started sailing at 6 in Portsmouth Harbour (UK), but I am now in my 50th year as a professional, insured, delivery skipper and on passage tutor. Many of my clients use my services because of my age which brings experience. Many times, younger skippers that went through Zero to Hero courses, like at UKSA, are thrown off contracts because of their lack of experience in difficult situations and the client calls me up and pays my premium to continue the contract. Although I am qualified in terms of the UK's MCA regulations, I am subject to yearly medicals, of course. I will carry on professionally until I fail a medical or knowing I may endanger paying clients. From a recreational perspective I keep a small Hunter on the Firth of Forth, which I use between contracts, mainly in the Dec/Jan period when not on an Ocean passage.

Age is something in the mind, but physical condition is of critical importance.

Thanks,

Martin

There’s likely also the implicit bias regarding the fact that proportionally fewer older folks use the Internet. There’s probably a lot more 81+ out there, but they’re busy in the real world, not wasting time in this virtual reality .
