How Many Have Sailed Offshore

I think the better question would be "who sets off on a 3,000 mile passage" having never sailed more than 200 miles with young children?

I have ocean voyaged.

I have young children

I realized earlier on the two do not mix for most people especially on yachts too small to carry at least one extra crew member.

That's the point I'm trying to make. Regardless of all the "experience of the skipper" (hopping down the coast from San Diego?) the responsible thing to do would have been to he'd further south and hop off for the Galapagos. When things went to **** on day 3 or so it would be easy enough to swing back for Central America or mainland Equador.

You see, I've been there seen my wife struggle seen others wife's and families struggle. Seen all the boats listed and sold when arrived in New Zealand. Wifes pissed husbands heart broken, etc, ect


Anyway, that's my story. Better to wait a few year sell that boat prior to departing the Caribbean. Make a few bucks on some real estate deals and go when the kids are ready.

On small boats, my long range trips have been from Fort Lauderdale, Fl to the Panama Canal; Port Angeles, Wa to Ventura, Ca; from LA Harbor to Cabo San Lucas.

Bermuda/NY is my farthest offshore to date. The trip ended too soon for me; I was just starting to feel comfortable and get in to the swing of thing.

It's a funny feeling when you've been gone so long and still long for more. I'd never read about Moitessier until after I'd done a crossing and then could appreciate his longing for the sea. Though - maybe not that much Beer and woman are nice sometimes.

To me…that is a healthy attitude, but like many things…you never forget your first!

I think this is definitely a "see how long yours is" type of debate. I would rather sail 200 miles offshore than 2 miles from the breakers on the Washington/Oregon coast. The water won't kill my boat, the rocks definitely will.
Sounds like that 4 year old should be giving all of us advice. I bet he knows how to be nice to others....

Anyway, as to the OP's question, I guess I qualify w.r.t offshore sea miles by a factor of 10+ but have no where near the experience as many members have here.

I took my 18 month old son on a Hawaii-Calif delivery, of course with moma. He had done 2 previous Hawaii-Calif trips in the womb, so he has about 8000 miles under his keel, and doesnt remember any of it. The most dangerous situation I ever put my son in was driving him to middle school and having a dingaling hit us head on at 50 miles an hour. I was glad I choose to drive my big work truck that day, because we were not injured, but the 19 year old in the other car was medivac materiel. I think Boatguy is trying to justify his timidity. I don't think you should artificially limit offshore to be 200 miles from a shoreline. An 800 nm long trip down from Victoria to San Francisco is usually done 60 miles off the foul, lee shore. Very much an offshore trip, in my opinion
