How Many Have Sailed Offshore

Ok I've been reading quite a few threads and now one in particular causes my curiosity to peak. Comments on Rebel Heart.
Some people make comments and to me it seems they have never left the dock. Then I got thinking, if they have left the dock there would be many more people out here.. And there are not that many..
So I'm wondering how many have sailed past the 200 mile mark

Re: How many have sailed offshore

Not me yet. Antigua to Tortola. Cape May NJ to Portsmouth VA. VI and BVI charters. Off shore (near coastal) NJ. Up and down Chesapeake and the Potomac. Moss Landing to Santa Cruz and Monterey bay. I'm working on it

Personal experiences are the only reason I'm not out there yet. But I expect I will be as soon as I can. What's your excuse?

I resemble that remark. At 200 miles you’ve just got the rhythm but you haven’t got the Karma going with the flow yet.

Re: How many have sailed offshore

MCA for commercial skipper offshore is UPTO 60 miles from a safe haven !

200 NM is ocean !

I think over hear 150 NM was regarded as being out of reach for air SAR, this may have been the range of the older SAR helicopters so it may now be more.

I recall the Sydney to holbart skippers comments after his rescue, that his crew had over 100 years of sailing time between them, the problem was that a large percentage of that experience was racing in Sydney harbour !

Not really shore whether it's 20 or 200 or 1000 NM out that makes the difference, the facts are that you can drown in 3 inches of water, you can get run over by stepping off the kerb, we don't have a crystal ball, just maybe with more experience we look both ways before crossing the road or commenting on the pensioner that doesn't use the crossing

As for those who have ventured more than 200 miles from land, here's one group, according to Wiki:

"As of March 28, 2014, 212 individuals have made 355 spaceflights to the ISS, including the six people currently at the ISS (Expedition 39). NASA astronauts Mark E. Kelly, Richard A. Mastracchio and Frederick W. Sturckow plus cosmonauts Yuri Malenchenko and Fyodor Yurchikhin made four spaceflights each to the ISS, while 26 people made three and 76 people made two. "

(ISS orbits about 220 miles from earth.)

Re: How many have sailed offshore

I'm guilty of the attitude (sometimes), but have at least done it. Many of the comedian posters here, doubtful. Note if they have a boat or blog or ever posted about some far away harbor and how to navigate it. Nope.

On the Rebel Heart thread a guy got completely roasted for saying something like prolific thread writing doesn't make one a great sailor. Now, this didn't apply to the situation with Rebel Heart as Eric is a competent skipper, but I agree with the statement. When you see a guy who does nothing but post garbage time and again with no actual substance, to me, it's a joke.

That's not to say that coastal cruising can't make one a great sailor BTW. It may be more difficult than deep blue water and I would think certainly presents more danger per hour. Can and near shore racers --- it's a skill that doesn't necessarily translate to true blue water experience.

Another Shellback here. Have been out past 200 miles plenty of times while serving Navy. Been out on one SV out there as well, though not mine. It is 'alone' out there for the most part.
