:-) I like your and Ann's attitude towards this.

Re: How long does it take to complete one circumnavigation?

Are you asking what is possible or what is advised?
Possible on a racing boat that costs millions - around 50 days.
Rushing around (like ARC) - around 15 months.
Leisurely, realy enjoying the places you want to visit - years.
E. g. Year in Carib
2-3 years - Pacific
Year - Australia/N. Z.
Year on the way to the Med - (Phillipines, Thailand, Andaman)
Year in Turkey
Year-two in Greece (Aegean & Ionian)
Year - Italy, France.
Year - Spain (rias), Canaries, Madeira.
Already counted 9-11 years.

Nope, it's because I want to see the pacific islands and then need to return home. For this I first need to cross the Atlantic, then the Panama canal, to end up in the pacific. Once I've seen enough of the pacific, probably easiest is to go for Cap-Town and follow the west-coast of Africa until back in Europe.

Well we took more than 20 years depending how you measure and are still sailing. Would like to go again but now lack the time. Should have done more loops in the Pacific like Jim. Should have should have should have but no regrets. Never could understand why one would want to do it fast. Circumnavigating is not the primary goal.

then of course there is the other end of the spectrum...jon sanders. in 1986-88 he completed 3 consecutive non-stop solo circumnavigation

he just seems to love going around and around. believe he's up to # 11 now

cheers,

That's it, Jim! (You and Ann win!) Let's turn that question on its head:

How long can you take to sail around the world?

On one approach to the Bahamas, we encountered a guy with two poled out headsails and called him up on the VHF. Turned out he was just completing a 14-year circumnavigation and when we asked what his recent weather forecast was, he replied, "I never pay attention to weather forecasts... when you're out there - sailing - you get what you get."

Fair winds all,

We have been at it for 17 years, now stuck due to Covid in South America. We would have completed our circumnavigation back to Australia last year, bloody Covid!

Re: How long does it take to complete one circumnavigation?

Ya know, we met a nice family in Noumea a few years back. They were from Maine and sailing on a Sundeer 64. They had had a stop in Panama (no choice t here) and this was their second stop. It seemed that they were gonna do a RTW, but didn't have much time due to children's scheduled progress through the schooling system and this was their last chance to "cruise" as a family. They anticipated stopping in South Africa, and then on to home. We later read that they got there in about 9 months. They seemed to be having a good time (according to them), but it just didn't grab me as a fun project. My thought is that they robbed their kids of a once in a lifetime opportunity in order to be sure that they got back "in time" for their schedule to be completed.

Takes all kinds...

That leaves out a lot of people who solo'd prior to these four.
Indeed it does, and some legendary ones.

Mine too. So I meander from place to place and hang out longer in those we like. Many times I have dropped the hook with plans to stay for a day or two and ended up there for weeks!

Yes, but many cruise the Pacific without any intention of cirucumnaviating. Like your case...it doesnt read like circumnavigating is a strong objective for you...just a possible route back to your start.

However, many do deliberately set out with the goal to sail around the world. Often wanna-bes post here about the subject. What puzzles me is what is the attraction of that specific objective.

I asked an ARC participant one time "why?"...as he rushed by on the docks like the rabbit of Alice in Wonderland...he never stopped moving long enough to actually have a conversation, but stated circumnavigating was on his bucket list and he was ticking it off. Why it was on his bucket list I will never know...
