How it works

Im starting a new thread on this question as l have confused myself and others trying to help .
Question .. How does coolant system work on this boat engine ( see photos) and what isystem

I have 3 hoses that go to floor of boat
1,HOSE ONE 1 inch hose leaves floor ( lake) goes to valve cut off, filter , water pump driven by belt , on to back of engine and connects into y on exhaust ( see photo)

2.HOSE TWO Roughly 11/2 hose leaves floor , cut off valve , then straight into long unit at top of engine

3 HOSE THREE roughly 1 1/2 inch leaves floor ( lake) and runs directly into same unit as hose 2 above

Re: How it works

is it possible that your water pump">raw water pump just feeds water to the exhaust to cool the exhaust, and you engine has a keel cooler being circulated with the engines water pump.

I don't see any heat exchanger...

That is my guess as well.

That is a problem. as the owner, you really need to know how your boat operates. (which is why you are asking questions, which is good)

Otherwise you'll be spending an arm and a leg paying others to work on your boat and on older boats, no two boats are alike. So you'll be paying them to figure it out as they go along.

Have you haver had the boat out of the water to see if those pipes go through the hull somewhere?

I see on your other post "cool system" that others have started talking about a keel cooler

Re: How it works

Your 100% right on that .
I have had it out but never thought to look.
It would be very hard to establish how it works , unless you had it out of water or taken apart.
They have started talking about a possible keel
Cooler but to be honest its had so many maybes, and other ideas that lm back to square one on what l have.
When l fine out 100% my next question was how to antifreeze. That in my books cannot be answered unless you know what you have.
The two large hoses 1 1/2 inch heading straight to floor must be some indicator for a mechanic.
One theory was a possible keel cooler welded to sub frame. If true surely the antifreeze in the standard engine would be part of that loop and no special anti freezing would be required other that exhaust cooling belt driven pump circuit.
I see on photo attached two small pipes go out to hot water tank , can't remember exactly from where they leave from.. see photo. I think one leaves from main engine the other from the grey think with paint peeling

Re: How it works

hose 2 and 3 lead to a pipe welded outside the hull

good system in cold lakes

Re: How it works

anything that has raw water in it will need some sort of winterizing.

anything that has automobile type antifreeze, if mixed properly will be fine.

you almost have to start taking hoses off things. and look at whats inside. but given your raw water pump is plumbed directly to the exhaust and not anywhere else, id start by winterizing that system first.

yes its quite possible that your engine coolant runs through a hotwater heater(calorifier) to make domestic hot water.

which your domestic water system will also need to to be winterized or drained/blown out. As will any HVAC systems, and waste systems(heads/holding tanks) shower drains.

Re: How it works

Much appreciated, all your feedback .
One of these days when boat out, l will get to final direction of those two 1 1/2 inch hoses that mysteriously disappear into the hull of the boat.
What started all this was 3 buckets of water in engine bay, Where it came from l do not know , possible freeze issue although l had 4ft bar heater going in bay.
How l find , again no clue.
Who says no stress with boats !!
