I think the words below the CMH letters say "Marine Insurance Specialist".
There also appears to be three flags at the top of the decal. Do these represent the letters CMH or are they country flags.

Re: Help identify please

Don’t know about CA, but in NY you need a title signed over to you, and a bill of sale. HIN, if it had one, etc, would be on the title and registration. Older boats didn’t have HINs, and you have the registration signed over (pre-‘73, I think)

If the PO didn’t give you that, you’re in a world of hurt, amigo....DMV will make your life hell. Strongly recommend you call them before making that 1/2 day trip - they will most likely send you packing to get paperwork - don’t waste the trip. You can also look into salvage titles, potentially declare it a home-built and apply for a title, etc.

Re: Help identify please

I'm a bit bewildered because in Australia I could look up the Register of boats to see who the owner is/was. A little research and I came up with this:

https://www.boatus.org/study-guide/boat/registration/

Surely you could do a search on CF 5821 CG? Where am I going wrong?

Fewer crazies in Oz.
US privacy laws generally preclude release of that info. It used to be easily available for documented vessels. No longer. Each state is different. Doubt the info is disclosed to the general public, just like vehicle license plate info.

DMV might release it to you with a convincing story, accompanied by some paperwork of their choice. I suspect there are ways to take title by claiming it as abandoned.

In Australia when buying a boat, car or ? privately we can do a REVS check to ensure the boat is not stolen and is free from any encumbrance. (REVS is a Government maintained register)

Boat REVS Check - REVSCheck.com.au

Buying a used boat? Don't risk it! Enter HIN to check for money owing. Odometer readings. First sale information. Price comparison. Vehicle ratings. Registration details. Sales listings. Written-off check. Engine details. Stolen check. Similar sales.

Re: Help identify please

I have an old HydroSwift cUddy cabin sitting in my yard that same color.
In CA, if the value is low enough, you might get it registered with a statement of facts form. I did it with an old Achiles inflatable that came with our ketch.
Since it has a CF number, a boat scrap yard should be able to help you (for a small fee.)

Re: Help identify please

I don't think I could ever buy a boat in the USA with confidence when I can't verify the title of the person selling the boat.

https://www.godownsize.com/find-owner-of-boat/

This seems to be a useful service using the HIN but it doesn't seem to mention ownership?

Re: Help identify please

Too old for a HIN, and even though they are supposed to, not every newer vessel has a HIN. I had a Dana 24 without (may have been obliterated during a repaint), and now own an original gelcoat Peep Hen that is unmarked.

Re: Help identify please

A HIN consists of a unique series of letters and numbers as shown below. A vessel’s HIN can be displayed on a metal plate attached to the transom or it can be moulded or engraved on the hull.Boat manufacturers have been required to mark all new vessels with a HIN meeting the required international standard (ISO 10087:1995(E)) since February 2001.

RegistrationBoatCode Providers will issue boat owners with a HIN certificate which is required to have the number recorded on the vessel’s registration with the Department.Registration details are used to update the HIN

Looks like a UK style.
No HIN/MIC required prior to November 1972

What is a HIN
