Freedom of Movement Around Our Globe, Aftermath of Paris

I am extremely concerned with effect of intensifying terrorism and influence on our freedom of movement as cruising sailors, I for one love the cruising sailors life because of the way we could hop countries around the globe's oceans.

As a matter of fact.. Aussie and US cruisers are likely to be well pleased when the EU drops Schengen and switches back to National borders..

prolonged El nino and climate change will probably have more effect on cruisers freedom of when and where they visit.

the only real change to where cruisers visit over the last 10 years has been the gulf of aden,and horn of Africa due to piracy,not terrorism.

Syria ,Libya and Lebanon were never on the list of cruising destinations.

the biggest threat to budget cruisers are the rising costs of cruising permits ,marinas and costly beaureacracy.........

Yes, I started cruising ~16 years ago and can't believe how high the government fees have become in many places.

I'm no longer surprised when I have to pay a few hundred dollars to check into a country. To me this is pretty unfair since in many of the same places someone could fly in, or even drive in, for a tenth that.

We've started to skip countries because of this. We look at the map and think... Well, geez, it'd be fun to stop there for a few days or a week or two, but its just not worth that much. Better to hop over it and spend more time in fewer places, that we know we like.

Should the US ever address our major open border then entire coast it might become inconvenient. as most know, you don't clear out of the US and it is VERY easy to return/enter from ANYWHERE without clearing.

Well.. at the moment they are restricted to the length of time they can spend in the Schengen Zone.. once de-Scheñgeised they will be able to spend 90 days in each country instead of the whole area.
Downside.. lottsa extra visa fees.. lol

True there are many other serious factors affecting our cruising. East Africa is not yet much affected by terrorism like we get it in Europe. Yet there are very real fears for future terrorism because of the offshore gas/oil exploration that is going on in Tanzania, Mozambique. There are many Americans, Canadians, Europeans involved. The security in these countries is so poor, at their airports, offshore. Piracy is very much down though because of heightened security because of that gas/oil exploration. Another development is the continued political dispute in Mozambique, the continued Zanzibar independence frictions. There is very little yacht cruising or liveaboard in this area, most of it in marinas like Richard's Bay SA or DarEsSalaam yacht club in Tanzania. Marinas in Mozambique not worth mentioning.

The terrorists are having their desired effect on you. Tell them to 'stuff it' and do what you want within your comfort zone. More people are still killed in car accidents than by these people that are trying to impose their will and religion on us. We still drive cars with at least some thought to safety. Do the same with cruising. Avoid the obvious bad areas and keep your wits about you. Some level of risk is required in life.

Why would that happen? It's quite probable that the common Visa policy will remain in place.

isis is winning. hell, osama bin laden is winning from the grave every time we entertain the notion that our freedom of movement or any other freedom is being compromised. the very purpose of islamic terroists, any terrorist, is to disrupt our lives and discussions such as this only fuel their efforts. i could just see bin laden laughing in his cave when the shoe bomber was apprehended. 'ha. look at that. the knucklehead didn't even manage to martyr himself and now all the infidels have to remove their shoes before they can even board a plane. hahahahahaaaaaaa.'

it's not unlike a purse snatching crime spree and the city reacts by forbidding women to carry purses in public.

Even the financial markets hardly react anymore.

Would be great for us Aussies cruising in Europe if the EU dumps Schengen and tighten up their borders.

Most of the immigrants pouring into Europe head for Britain. No work permit in use. I suspect border policies to be tightened up again.

New Zealanders already get a much better deal in Europe. Compensation from the French sinking the Rainbow Warrior in Auckland all those years ago.

I suspect it might be a hassle entering where the mass migrations are occuring. I'd avoid those areas like the plague in a cruising yacht.
