Explosion Aboard the Canadian Yacht Oblio in SavuSavu

G'day, mates. It was reported on the Rag of the Air, (1900 UTC, 8173 upper side band) this morning, March 13th, that the Canadian flagged vessel, Oblio, a 35ftish, steel monohull, had an explosion on board last night around 8 pm local time in SavuSavu, Fiji. There was a fire on board. The local fire brigade towed the vessel to shore. One person on boat, Shane was taken to the hospital with severe burns. The other person believed to be on board, Sharon was unaccounted for. That’s all the details I have at this time.

Re: Exposion aboard the Canadian yacht Oblio in SavuSavu

Was that the yacht that a couple were living aboard (had/have a teeshirt printing business there), close in on the eastern side above the coprashed?

Please keep us posted. I hope this isn't involving carelessness with propane.

G'day, mates. Pete, I will try to get some clarification for you.
The only update this morning was that Shaun (I had wrote Shane) had died.

Astrid,

Really sad. Might be propane, which along with gasoline I don't like on board. Next boat for me is going to have an electric galley and dinghy. Propane is 1.5 times heavier than air.

That sucks in a big way. My commiserations to all affected. Thanks to Matauwhi and Astrid for the links. I'm so busy I didn't get a chance to search yesterday.

I have left Allen's thread in place, since it is in Meets and Greets, and is his introduction. I have followed your example though, and left a link in that thread to this one

Re: Explosion Aboard the Canadian Yacht Oblio in SavuSavu

I wonder if the forensics capacity of the Fijians is going to be able to determine a cause. Their deaths are tragic, but if other liveaboards can learn something from it beyond "must have been the propane", they needn't be meaningless.
