Engine Oil Flushing

I have a Yanmar 4JH57 diesel with 1500 hours on it and about 4 years old. Yes quite a lot for its age.
Do people recommend doing an engine oil flush using a commercial product or with diesel added on a relatively new and well looked after engine.
If so what do you use and how often should I flush the engine.

There is no reason to flush the oil lubrication system of an engine as long as you do regular oil/filter changes and nothing catestrophic has occurred (such as engine filling with saltwater). I'm not aware of any engine manufacturer that recommends flushing as periodic service.
I'm of the opinion "flushing" is something invented by the automotive quick-oil- change shops to get more money out customers.

agree; but coolant might be another story. My manual calls for every other year.

At one time, I would have said an emphatic NO because a well maintained engine with regular oil and filter changes should not sludge up .....but now that we have common rail engines (with or without EGR ) the condition of the oil at the end of the change period is such that I now think flushing has some merit. On my own engine (common rail, truck) I drain the oil pan completely and then pour 2 liters of fuel oil into the filler and let it drip for an hour, then plug the pan and refill with new engine oil which remains fairly clean well into the service period.
I’m very wary of running an engine with flushing oil in her veins and wouldn’t do it on a customers engine ....but might be tempted to do so before stripping down a sludgy engine for rebuild to see how effective it is.....

No.


Just drain the oil and replace the filter.


The main reason engine oil has to be replaced is breakdown due to shear. Over time the oil loses its viscosity and lubricity as a result.


A secondary reason is dilution by various contaminants.


The flush products or diesel do nothing useful. Maybe they make the oil pan cleaner. What are you going to, serve sandwiches on it?

If it's all synthetic oil it may not even be due for it's first oil change.

Here is a thread where we take about engine oil additives.
Last year I did not add anything to my engine oil but instead hired a mechanic to rebuild the engine because it is an old engine that was not well maintained.

This year I will be adding sea foam into the engine oil run it for about 5 hours and then change the oil.
The only reason I will be doing this is after talking it over with my cousin (who I trust on the subject) he recommended I use sea foam once every few years.
