Three very important sentences!!!

Yes, a failed busbar is unusual and if the OP could expand on what he found, it would be very helpful (educational) for other readers because these problems don't occur often.

Re: Electrical issues in St Michaels MD USA

I bet you it is your ground common. The starter and windlass have their own grounds, but odds are you have a common ground that runs through your shunt that tracks your house amperage. Start from the ground battery terminal and work backwards. My guess is that the lug on the shunt came off the cable.

Not sure how a bus bar can fail. It’s a piece of metal.

The connections could though.

I go with a WAG until the OP comes back with the facts!

Corrosion between terminals and bar
Corrosion in the terminal(s)
Looses connections between terminals and bar.
Two bars joined with a jumper strap and the strap has failed (corrosion or undersized).

What in the world is a "partly faulty" bus bar?

I'm sorry to have reacted badly and at the expense of the writer. The crowd's comments are what got me spun-up. The St. Michaels area does have a number of Bentleys but certainly none of the owners of those are boat technicians. One is see is owned by the real estate magnate and the other is owned by the head of a pharmaceutical company.

If the real estate/Bentley guy is who I think he owns a very nice Swan 47 and is a good sailor.
