Dumb question: lanocote

Hi! We’re new sailboat owners and just bought some Lanocote to protect our turnbuckles and such from corrosion, but I just opened the jar, and it’s a nasty dark brown color. Is this normal? Or did I get a bad batch?

Re: Dumb question: lanocote

Looks ok to me ..the natural colour is brownish

Lanacote is an excellent choice for applications like grease or tefgel can't be used

Re: Dumb question: lanocote

I do not know how it is supposed to look, but I know it is sheep’s grease extracted from shaved wool. The color could be the natural color of what is collected from the wool.
In beauty products they use it and call it eucerin (Nivea).

Is it the actual Lanocoat product made by Forespar? Drag some out with a screw and post a picture so we can say for sure.

Looks normal. Very sticky, hard to wash off.

Re: Dumb question: lanocote

Hi, loribelle,

Yes, it looks fine. On a hot day, it will melt if left out in the sun. For our turnbuckles, Jim uses a high pressure grease, believing it to be a better lubricant for the high pressure, and the number of turns. Lanolin (lanocote) he says would be better than nothing. He does use it where s/s screws go into aluminum, seems content with it, whereas he used to use various forms of anti-seize.

Funny you noticed the colour first and didn’t mention the smell...

Re: Dumb question: lanocote

Wow, I would’ve sworn you accidentally posted a picture of your morning coffee

Yes, I don’t think that’s too far from normal. My lanocote is the colour of toffee and it’s now about 6 years old. I reckon as you start using it, the colour will lighten up somewhat.

Re: Dumb question: lanocote

This is what ours looks like. As TW says its difficult to wash off fingers and soap doesn't work so good stuff. Just use disposable gloves when applying it would be my recommendation after lots of scrubbing the first time.

No idea why mine has to come all the way from SoCal, surely we have sheep in England

Thanks, everyone!! It does kind of make me want a cup of coffee (until I smell it!)

Re: Dumb question: lanocote

That's the stuff. Just get into the habit of always dunking bolts and screws into it before use. Surprised you mentioned smell though, Lanocote doesn't smell much at all...

Re: Dumb question: lanocote

Nor ours, just a slight whiff but only if you put your nose right in the pot. Perhaps it is coffee after all. Best stick to tea
