Current Location Map For Your Website/Blog
I've been working on a little website to address some needs I had, which maybe some other people do to. I wanted a clean and simple IFrame showing my current position that I could update by sending an email to. In the end it looks like this:
To update it you need to be able to send an email, either SSB/cellular/satellite. I also put a GPX uploader in so you can record passages and make observations that others can see. You can IFrame those as well.
I literally just put it online this morning so if anyone wants to use it go ahead, and if you have any questions let me know. If you run into a problem it's probably my fault so just let me know and I'll fix it.

Thanks, I guess I should have put the URL as well. The Keel
It's free, you just need a google account to sign up. I'm lazy and didn't want to deal with storing passwords.

Very very cool
And a rarity, useful as well
Almost anyway, I just crashed it trying to upload a gpx.
Logged on via Google, choose a file then hit upload and got..
" Muster the damage control parties!.....
You might have tried to access a portion of the site that requires you to be logged in"
But few things work first time

Can you email me the gpx files you were trying to upload? radpin (at) gmail.com . And tell me where the files came from? Garmin, OpenCPN, etc?
Thanks, I'll try to fix it tonight.

Re: Current Location Map For Your Website/Blog
I'm interested in checking this out, since the map application I was using (triptracker.net) just went under.
Would this be something I can embed in my website as you did on yours?
Just tried to sign-in to "The Keel" with Google account and got an error message.
Thanks!

Sorry you had that error, can you answer a couple of questions on that?
- Did you try to login ~1:52pm Pacific time?
- Do you have an existing google account?
- Do you have an existing gmail email address?
But yep, once I get it so you can login ( ) it should work just fine for you to put a map on your website. You can update it by sending an email in so via ssb or sat phone you can let folks know where you are.

Re: Current Location Map For Your Website/Blog
I think that was me assuming that my time zone is 2 hrs ahead of you now after Daylight savings
I have a Google account and it shows up in the upper right corner on the page where it says "The Keel would like to verify your email address..."
After hitting the "ACCEPT" button it gave the error, fyi. Cheers

Re: Current Location Map For Your Website/Blog
Michele;
I made a small change which might work for you, but I also put in a lot more logging so if you try again and have a problem I should get a bit more visibility into the error. Let me know and thanks for the patience!

Re: Current Location Map For Your Website/Blog
Thanks Michele; I'm glad my guess was right. Basically I was reading a value back from Google which your profile doesn't have. I didn't really need it anyway, so I just stopped looking for it, and there you go. I'm sure you weren't the only person with that problem.
Any other problems anyone gets, please let me know. Happy to help.

Re: Current Location Map For Your Website/Blog
I put out a couple of new updates today:
- spot integration, so if you have spot you can have thekeel.com iframes follow you around and you'll show up on the map
- places. anything around town that's helpful for other sailors. from hiking all over mexican towns you figure out where the clean fuel is, the good produce, etc.
- you can edit and delete things now!
If anyone has any questions, comments, or suggestions please let me know!
