Cruising Association

For any CFers cruising in Europe, especially those not originally from her, I highly recommend having a look at joining the Cruising Association -- The Cruising Association

This is a uniquely fabulous organization, offering a wealth of cruising information including cruising guides for most European countries, a large collection of cruising reports from the members, and various benefits like a wide variety of discounts for marine things. I even got a discount on my insurance with Pantaenius! Reciprocity with various other clubs even means free berthing in some places (like in the center of Helsinki!). The CA also has representatives in various countries available for consultation and help in case of need; the Russian guy is particularly invaluable.

Membership is very inexpensive, with a ridiculous joining fee of 15 pounds, and modest annual dues (85 pounds for non-Brits), and also offers typical yacht club benefits -- a cool clubhouse in London with rooms where you can spend the night, a lecture series, an excellent library, and of course -- fellowship with like-minded cruisers. If you are British and into such things, you even get the right to fly the Blue Ensign.

I have no connection except being a very happy member.

Re: Cruising Association

Thoroughly endorse the recommendation. We sailed the Med for 10 years without realising what we were missing. The CA also operates a database called CAptain's Mate on which any CA member visiting a harbour or anchorage can post pilot book updates using a PC or Apple/Android app. That plus the various private member forums on sailing regions; technical issues; regulations etc is alone worth the annual sub. Oh, and there's also a quarterly magazine 'Cruising' and an online database of member's logs to help in planning future cruising itineraries.

As for the blue ensign - great if you want to masquerade as a Kiwi...
