We have been circumnavigating for over five years, leaving St. Thomas, VI and currently in the
Greek Islands. We are constantly amused by "cruising myths." Most are exaggerations of some speck of truth and some have no basis in fact at all.
A recent example occurred in
Turkey. We were invited to a coffee joining about 8 "residents" of a marina who filled us in on everything we needed to know about
Turkey. BTW, "residents" we define as people who have not moved their boats in at least 4 years. And "Mayor" we define as the resident who has been there the longest. One of the things they told us about was what we refer to as the poopy-copters.
The story, as told to us, is that Turkey has a fleet of specially equipped helicopters that fly over
marinas and
anchorages looking for brown spots of
water being ejected from boats. When they spot the poopy violator, they land and issue a hefty fine. This story was told in all seriousness and repeated to us several times by other residents.
We have decided that one of the things that we can do is create a list of all of the cruiser myths we have heard on our
circumnavigation.
Please help us ensure that our list is complete...we know that you can help.
Best,
