I am looking forward to getting back to Panama and that whole area. The beer prices up here are crazy. I'm actually thinking of cutting down because of the cost. I think El Salvador had .75 cent beer at the bar in the marina. If you were there you could stock up on beer that was already cold. There is no wind and it's overcast most of the time so don't get to use your solar/wind.

I don't know about this. With 1.5 months of use I have found that my 290W of solar is making enough enough power to run the frig during the day and recharge for the nights use even during the overcast days. So far I'm only using about 60AH/day from a system that could (and has a couple of times) done 115AH/day.

So don't be heating on my beer!

It isn't all roses. It rained most of last week and was cloudy. I expected that the solar didn't keep up with the beer cooling when I finally went back to the boat. But it did and it is amazing how a "solar" panel makes a lot of power on an overcast day. According to the log in the solar controller the daily power into the batteries was the same the batteries were fully charged.

On the down side I found that having the frig on 24/7 causes the freezer to ice up after about 5 days till the ice gets into the fan between my boxes and it stops turning. Then the beer is only cold, but not quite to "beer cold" level

I'd like to provide first hand witness to Don's beer cooling experiment. The beer was very cold and quite tasty last week on his yacht.

Don, I hate to tell you this but, in your cruising area, all you have to do to get cold beer is to get a string bag, fill it with beer and lower it over the side. In an hour your beer will be as cold as you want. String bag and line $3, cold beer priceless.

Did this for years on river rafting trips. Of course depends on temperature of water, but very low tech and foolproof. Found that even on the warmer rivers beer was refreshingly cool (got used to it anyway). Advantage with a boat at anchor is you can weigh the bag with something heavy and drop down deep where it is much cooler.

That only gets the beer to 52 degrees, thats not cold.

Besides fish (and CF members) pee in that water I don't feel like putting my lips on it.

Great you have that system running well.

I don't have my cat any more but always wondered what sort of problem I would have with my beer if I was going to go to the Bahamas where it is just too expensive.

Taking enough to keep me happy for a month or two would sink the boat too much. And I don't care for rum.

This boat stuff really is a bunch of compromises isn't it?
