Carter 30 damaged Rudder

Good morning,
I'm new to the site, so bare with me
I have recently, last week! acquired a carter 30 from 1991
i needed to remove the mast to motor over various rivers and canals in Holland.
My moring is in Volendam so it took me 4 days.
During this time i damaged my rudder(stupid mistake) and the boat needs to come out of the water.
The damage is extensive so i am not sure how to go about things!
obviously the rudder will have to be removed.
Any Carter owners on this forum?
Any useful info is welcome

Owned one back inthe 90's.. suggest you see if they will let you drop the rudder while in the slings.. else you will need to dig a hole to get it clear.
Otherwise not much to say till more is known.. some pics of the damage would be helpful.. theres a few boat repair experts in the membership.

If you are in a yard, I doubt that they will let you "dig a hole". I don't even think Boatie was serious :-).

You should be able lash up the rudder, so it can't drop inadvertently. Then "unbutton" everything along the length of the stock. When everything is loose, call in the Travelift again, unlash, and let the rudder drop out. Achtung! It will be heavy, so make sure you have the top of the stock nicely guyed before it drops the last few inches to clear the tube. Once it's out, set the boat back onto it's keel. The cradle is only to stop 'er falling over.

Reinstalling the rudder is just the reverse, but of course if your damage involves the tube and the adjacent frozen snot, that would have to be repaired first.

I think boatmans point was to try and remove the rudder while still in the slings. Over here once you are in the cradle it is an extra charge every time they have to come pick you back up.
When you have the rudder out make sure the shaft and tangs have not been bent. I have see a badly damaged rudder repaired and then when it was hung again it had a definite lean to one side! Just the bottom 400mm.

Yes, I realize there would be an extra charge for the lift, but I really don't see any other way of doing it with this design.

I'll admit that if you can do all the preparatory work while still afloat, yet secure the rudder against dropping out inadvertently, then one lift will do it. Depending on the yard and how busy the lift is, you might be permitted to take the time to do the prep work while in the lift basin or in the slings. Best to ask the yard in advance if that will be possible. Doing the prep work at you own slip, then moving to the list basin doesn't strike me as a good idea.

But the yard will no doubt be smart enuff to see a second lift fee in the offing :-)

Get them to lift you just before their lunch break and leave you in the slings.. that should give you ample time to do it all before they get back from lunch..
Thats what they did for me in Andratx, Mallorce when I had to drop my rudder to replace some bits.

Bye the way, Are there any Carter 30 owners out there?
The two previous owners are not available and i have discovered a forest of stopcocks, half of which i have no idea of their function!!
foul-water tank, toilet, and the rest! can't find any info on the web and the boat was built in Poland.

Best thing to do is stick your head in the bilge and follow the hoses. No telling what might have changed since the boat was new plus:

- you will see how and where the hoses are routed
- if they are all in good condition
- all below water line hoses are double clamped for safety.
