You guys are smoking Crack if you think a Cruising Boat wants to surf down waves...ha ha ha HELLO....McFly Anyone Home? Sheesh what next...how to fly a spinny in 40kts of wind on passage with the wife and kids?

Almost...but it took me lots of polishing to get the damn rust stains off our flatware from the "expert dragging behind the boat advice"...ha ha ha

But on the bright side maybe dragging the dirty dishes behind us help land this monster while going through the San Lorenzo Channel heading into La Paz...after the 45 minute fight my arms were so jellly-like, I could barely pull this monster up over the taff rail....good memories.....

It is not quite clear what you are arguing here, mate.

Are you saying that cruising boats don't ever surf down waves?

Perhaps not, but how do you explain our boat, with a 44 foot LWL frequently hitting speeds of 12+ knots, a fair number of 13 and 14+ knot shots and a few in the mid 15s? Think that it is just sailor BS? Well, it is what showed o n the knotmeter, usually for durations of 5 to 15 seconds. Usual scenario is fairly deep angles, wing and wing, wind circa 25-30 true, and well developed seas of 4 metres or so.

And no, while we do fly our conventional masthead kite, with only two old farts on board we only do so in less than 15-18 apparent, usually less.

So, put away your popcorn and your derisive laughter and try sailing a modern cruising boat... they do seem to surf, and they love it (and so do Ann and I).

Its not all its cracked up to be salty, its like putting your clothes in the spin dryer first. The pegs dont hold too well either......

We have frequently dragged our clothes behind the boat in a web bag to clean them. You have to be careful not to leave them too long, they can get worn out pretty quick. What we usually do is put them into a bucket of soapy salt water first and act like an agitator for a short while, so I guess you could say we are only rinsing them in the bag, but they are most certainly not clean when they go in the bag.

During a passage from Virginia to Tortola, we were regularly doing 10-11 knots in my full-keeled, 9,000 lb ballasted Island Packet 380, surfing down smooth 24' swells in a fully developed sea (Force 9), with only about 1/3 of the 110% foresail rolled out. The Hull Speed for the boat (32' LWL) is 7.5 knots.

I'd call that surfing.

There is a difference in surfing for a few meters and pushing the boat above hull speed. Surfing is good and fun in most conditions but as the wind and seas pick up and the boat is always above hull speed plus you are surfing waves thats when it gets dangerous to break equipment, broach (as in the boat is overpowered and rounds up) or the energy involved in each wave makes you more liable to be knocked around by those waves. It also put the tiny, teeny, weeney little steering paddle of wind wane steering under greater pressure.

Yes its fun to say oh look 14 knots... But if its any more than a flash you are deluding yourself about your safety.
