If you are just passing through, I shouldn’t have to pay the tax.

If I had been in a private marina vs a county owned marina, I would not have been assessed.

So I’m curious if anyone has been in the same situation and what they did about it.

Even in a private Marina you would have been assessed. It's just my wonderful state trying to extort every dime they can from anyone. I would appeal it quickly and explain the boat is gone. If you don't have anything in Ca. I don't think they have any leverage. I would love to tell them to pound sand but make sure they can't get you. Try nicely at first but our state is draconian on it's taxes. Write a few nice letters. Send them registered mail and keep proof of every communication.

Re: California tax on transiting boat

Welcome to the peoples republic of California. The most un-american state of all. Why anyone would ever want to deal with them in any way shape or form is beyond me. I'd sail around it, I don't care how many nights it would take.
Screw those communists.

Re: California tax on transiting boat

Hi.
Just to clarify, does this tax apply to US residents only or to visiting sail boats too?

Just wondering if i might want to avoid USA entirely when i cross the Pacific.

Just to let you know, this personal property tax is nothing new. I was a graduate student back in the 1960s and got a bill for personal property. I was the only one of about 100 grad students that did, so we just ignored it (Equal Protection?). When we finally got finished with school and postdoctoral training and tried to buy a house, the bill plus a LOT of fines and interest turned up as a lean on me personally. In order to close on our first home we had to pay it. Thanks a lot, Governor RONALD REAGAN.

Re: California tax on transiting boat

This has come up before. California assumes all boats in a marina are owned in California. They look up your documentation to get your address and send you a bill. They assume you will pay rather than fight. They have even used the CG documentation site to find all boats with a home port named as anywhere CA and put them on the tax rolls no matter where they are owned.

You do not owe. Good luck in getting out of big brothers sights.
